Watch Harrison Ford Hulk Out Onstage at Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con Panel

As a longtime fan of both Harrison Ford’s acting career and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I am absolutely thrilled to witness this iconic actor joining the Marvel universe as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in “Captain America: Brave New World.” This surprise appearance at Comic-Con 2024 was a game changer for me.

“What does it mean to be Red Hulk?” was Harrison Ford’s response in a 2023 interview with ComicBook, when asked about his possible role in Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World.” A year later, during Comic-Con’s Hall H event, the renowned actor, known for his iconic roles in “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones,” was taken aback as a recently released trailer revealed the Red Hulk rampaging through the White House, followed by Anthony Mackie’s Captain America intervening.

Ford, who is 82 years old, has replaced the late William Hurt in portraying the character Thaddeus Ross with a mustache, first seen in “The Incredible Hulk” (2008) and “Captain America: Civil War” (2016). According to Ford, he would have grown a mustache for the role if asked. Mackie jokingly added, “Tell Tom Holland I’ve got Harrison Ford,” referencing their long-standing playful feud.

“Ford expressed his excitement about taking on the role with a rich history, originally portrayed by Bill. He stated, ‘I used to be that character, but now I am Thaddeus, thrilled to join the Marvel Universe.’ I’ve witnessed marvelous performances from talented actors in this universe, and I couldn’t help but desire to be part of it.”

Ford expressed his great pride in being part of this film, adding that he believes it has turned out exceptionally well (Ford is referring to the fourth installment of the film directed by Julius Onah, featuring new cast members Danny Ramirez as Falcon, Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph, Giancarlo Esposito as Sidewinder from the Serpent Society, and Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/the Leader).

Previously, there had been speculation that Harrison Ford would reappear as the recast Ross in both “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Thunderbolts.” However, during a panel for the latter film (scheduled for release in May 2025), Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige clarified that Ford’s character is not involved in this project. Additionally, Feige disclosed that the Thunderbolts team in the movie does not derive its name from the historic Army general-turned-president.

At the convention, attendees watched clips featuring the latest Avengers team, a partially awakened Celestial named Tiamut from last year’s “Eternals” film, and adamantium – the near-indestructible metal used in Captain America’s shield and embedded into Wolverine’s bones through the Weapon X project.

At the conclusion of Feige’s discussion about “Captain America 4” during the presentation, he remarked with excitement, “Nothing beats my geeky existence, until Harrison Ford says ‘adamantium’!”

Captain America: Brave New World opens only in theaters February 14th, 2025.
