Every first-year student attending the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry undergoes a significant milestone: they enter the Great Hall at the beginning of each term to be assigned to one of Hogwarts’ four houses. By putting on the Sorting Hat, young witches and wizards in the magical world of Harry Potter are sorted into Gryffindor (home for the brave-hearted), Hufflepuff (a place for those who are just and loyal), Ravenclaw (where intelligence and learning flourish), or Slytherin (where cunning individuals work tirelessly to accomplish their goals).
20 years after Gary Oldman debuted as wizard Sirius Black in “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” (2004), he’s been assigned to a Hogwarts House for the very first time.
In a recent chat with Josh Horowitz from Happy Sad Confused, I, as a bewildered Harry Potter fan, found myself seeking guidance on my Hogwarts house. To my delight, Oldman, who was equally puzzled at first, joined me in this quest. Here’s the magical moment when we discovered our houses together:

Horowitz wondered if you’ve ever assigned yourself to one of the Hogwarts houses from Harry Potter, or if you’re aware of which house you might belong to.
Oldman asked, “Have I encountered this before?” After explaining trait-based sorting, Horowitz’s explanation prompted Oldman to laugh and say, “I’m not familiar with it.”
Or more informally:
Oldman questioned, “Have I run into this thing before?” When Horowitz introduced the idea of trait-based sorting, Oldman chuckled, “Never heard of it.
After that, Horowitz outlined certain traits to help decide if Oldman is a Gryffindor, similar to the character Sirius Black, or from a different house altogether. He inquired, “Is courage, diligence, perseverance, justice, commitment characteristics you possess?
Upon learning that Oldman had been assigned to Hufflepuff House, the actor proudly announced, “I’m a Hufflepuff!
Then, turning to the crowd, he remarked, “A Hufflepuff? Even in my movies, I can’t seem to get this right! I’m a Huffenpuff? So it turns out I’m a Hufflepuff. Ever had an experience like puffing a huff?” (In this version, I’ve used “huffed” instead of “huffled your puff,” aiming for a more natural and easy-to-read sentence.)
In the magical realm of Harry Potter, I had the pleasure of portraying Sirius Black, the enigmatic guardian to Daniel Radcliffe’s beloved character, from 2004 to 2011 across four spellbinding films. Fast forward to 2022, I found myself once more sharing the screen with young Radcliffe for the heartwarming reunion special, “Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts,” which graced our screens via HBO Max. This special gathering was a nostalgic trip down memory lane, reminiscing about the first film that captivated us all back in 2001 – “The Philosopher’s Stone/Sorcerer’s Stone.
In the reunion special on Sirius, Oldman stated that Remus Lupin, the character from Prisoner of Azkaban who was wrongly accused of treachery and framed for a Muggle murder, is portrayed as a villain initially. However, it becomes clear later that he’s innocent. He’s an interesting character, Oldman added, expressing a wish that he had understood Lupin’s full story earlier. We learn more about him bit by bit through the books.
In a subsequent visit to The Drew Barrymore Show in 2023, Oldman expressed his gratitude towards Harry Potter, saying, “I’m grateful for Harry Potter.
He expressed, “Indeed, those two characters – Batman and Harry Potter – truly rescued me. To explain, playing Jim Gordon in the Christopher Nolan-directed Dark Knight trilogy allowed me to put in minimal effort for a substantial paycheck and then spend more time with my children.
