As a long-time Marvel fan who’s witnessed the evolution of these iconic characters since the early days of comic books, I must say that the upcoming third season of “What If…?” is a dream come true! The idea of Storm wielding Mjolnir as the Goddess of Thunder and seeing Sam Wilson’s Captain America leading an A.V.E.N.G.E.R. mech team has been brewing in my mind for years. And who would have thought we’d see Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight and Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi back in the MCU, not to mention a return of Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm from the classic “X-Men: The Animated Series”?

Season 3 introduces beloved characters such as Captain America/Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), The Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), The Red Guardian (David Harbour), Captain Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), and Storm/Ororo Munroe (Alison Sealy-Smith, reprising her famous role from X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men ’97).
According to Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios, “What If…?” season 3 seems to wrap up a trilogy-like storyline. It ventures to unanticipated locations and delves deeper into the Multiverse than the first two seasons. Moreover, it introduces characters that are far from predictable. The season concludes with what Winderbaum describes as a poignant and satisfying resolution for Uatu, The Watcher.
The episodes are helmed by directors Bryan Andrews, known for “Marvel Zombies,” and Stephan Franck, recognized for “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” Matthew Chauncey (“Ms. Marvel”), Ryan Little (“Runaways”), and series creator A.C. Bradley handle the writing duties. The executive producers are Andrews alongside Brad Winderbaum (“X-Men ’97”), Kevin Feige (“Deadpool & Wolverine”), Louis D’Esposito (“Agatha All Along”), and Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt (“I Am Groot”).
