Watch These If You Liked Exterritorial!

As a movie enthusiast, I must say that I was thoroughly captivated by the Netflix original film “Exterritorial”. This high-octane German actioner tells the gripping tale of Sara (Jeanne Goursaud), a resilient single mother with a military background, who embarks on a relentless quest to find her missing son, last seen within the walls of a U.S. consulate building.

While the narrative may echo familiar themes of parents going to great lengths to safeguard their children, “Exterritorial” manages to stand out as an engrossing escapist thriller, boasting a fierce leading lady and a heartfelt emotional core. The sense of familiarity might not be entirely novel, but for those who appreciate such films, it offers numerous relatable counterparts that you’re sure to resonate with.

With that in mind, we have cobbled together five films to watch after you experience Exterritorial.

Commando

Is it possible to compile a list of action thrillers without featuring an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie? We strongly believe not. Among the numerous Schwarzenegger films we could have selected, “Commando” stands out as a timeless classic sure to ignite your adrenaline. This film follows John Matrix (Schwarzenegger), a former Special Forces operative, who finds his peaceful lifestyle disrupted when villains kidnap his daughter, Jenny (Alyssa Milano), at the behest of a South American dictator seeking to coerce Matrix into leading a coup.

Similar to Sara from the novel “Exterritorial,” Matrix demonstrates an unyielding resolve in his mission to save his child. The film’s action is engaging and sustained throughout, making it an ideal selection when you’re seeking a thrilling escape into a high-octane, yet thoughtfully crafted action flick.

Taken

Liam Neeson might not have originated the “parent on a mission to save a child in danger” film subgenre, but he is certainly its most recognizable figure. His portrayal of frantic father Bryan Mills in the movie “Taken” has led to numerous memes, two sequels (so far), and numerous imitators. Neeson’s intense performance and unwavering dedication to his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), add a level of depth that is not always present in similar films. It’s no surprise that it has such a devoted following.

If you’re craving more thrilling action with a parent who will travel to extreme lengths to safeguard their offspring, you won’t need to search any longer. This 2008 production continues to stand as top-notch entertainment and may have served as an inspiration for the previously mentioned “Exterritorial”.

Breaking In

Breaking In is a decent popcorn thriller with Gabrielle Union playing a determined mother safeguarding her family during a nerve-wracking home invasion. Similar to Exterritorial, the movie primarily takes place in one location, creating a growing sense of tension as the characters feel increasingly trapped.

Let’s be clear about it: “Breaking In” leans towards the predictable, but it remains an enjoyable option when you’re seeking relaxation and a temporary escape from everyday life during your evenings.

Skyscraper

We’re not discussing the controversial ’90s action film featuring the late Anna Nicole Smith, but instead, the 2018 epic movie titled Skyscraper, starring Dwayne Johnson and Neve Campbell. Similar to Exterritorial, Skyscraper largely takes place within a single location, with a steadfast character (Johnson) going all out to protect his family from danger. In this instance, Johnson is trying to rescue his wife (Campbell) and their two children (McKenna Roberts and Noah Cottrell), who are trapped in a colossal building that’s been set ablaze by ruthless terrorists.

A skyscraper might not elicit the same heartfelt response as a movie such as Exterritorial, but there’s no denying that it offers an entertaining escape filled with thrilling and energetic action scenes.

Kidnap

In this gripping abduction tale, Halle Berry takes center stage as the determined protagonist, Karla. A dedicated single mother, she embarks on a relentless mission to free her son, portrayed by Sage Correa, from the grasp of two ruthless kidnappers. Reminiscent of Sara in Exterritorial, Karla’s resolve is unwavering, risking her life and taking charge, selflessly fighting to save her child.

If you’re game to check this one out, you can find it streaming on Tubi as of this writing.
