Reflecting on the fascinating journey of these talented individuals, it’s quite remarkable to see how their early roles in Waterloo Road set the stage for their subsequent successes. The school may have been a crucible of drama and personal turmoil, but it served as a launchpad for careers that have soared to new heights.
Following a hiatus in 2015, the high school drama “Waterloo Road” made its comeback on our TVs in January 2023, debuting Season 11. Season 12 was broadcasted towards the end of last year, and this year, we’ve already seen Season 13.
This September, BBC One will air season 14, and you’ll be able to stream all eight fresh episodes on BBC iPlayer simultaneously. The new season features a mix of recognizable characters and fresh faces.
The series has also been renewed for a further two seasons so there’s plenty more to come.
In the upcoming season, we’ll see comedian Jason Manford stepping into the role of an unconventional new school principal named Steve Savage. He replaces Kim Campbell, portrayed by Angela Griffin.

Who is Kim Campbell? Known for her nurturing and empathetic nature, Kim was involved romantically with deputy head Andrew Treneman. They left together for Rwanda, but Kim illegally took a baby girl named Grace from there before eventually returning home without custody. After a merger with another school, Kim had an affair with the malevolent executive head Max Tyler, but ended their relationship when he revealed his true character. However, Kim later discovered she was pregnant with Max’s child and gave birth to a son named Dexter before departing from the school. Jamie Glover as Andrew Treneman
Who is Andrew Treneman? He was the deputy head of the school until season 2. Known for his attempts to implement policies he used at expensive private schools, he often stirred up controversy among his colleagues. In 2007, he chose to accept a teaching position in Rwanda and invited Kim to join him as well, marking his departure from the school.
In the twelfth season, Andrew reappeared and rekindled his relationship with Kim while they resumed their professional collaboration. However, in the subsequent thirteenth season, he faced a challenging time battling cancer, eventually proposing to Kim and relinquishing his position at the academy.

Katie Griffiths as Chlo Charles
Among the initial students at Waterloo Road was Chloe, who was the child of art instructor Izzie Redpath (Jill Halfpenny), tragically lost to a stabbing. She also had a strong bond with her deceased stepfather, Tom Clarkson. A romantic relationship with Donte Charles led them to elope and subsequently have a daughter named Izzy. In later seasons, viewers watched Chloe mature into a mother herself. Sadly, in the premiere of the 2023 revival series, she suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage.
Grantly Budgen – Philip Martin Brown
The grumpy and frequently sarcastic head of English at Waterloo Road, a character that spanned the show’s first nine series from 2006 to 2013, was the longest-serving character. Beneath his cranky demeanor, he had a tender heart, which viewers came to see following his wife’s death and during his relationship with cafeteria worker Maggie. His last storyline, involving kidney failure and eventual death before a suitable donor could be found, was deeply moving.
Jack Rimmer – Jason Merrells
Jack was the head of the school for three seasons, stepping down midway through season 3 to relocate to Dubai (he made a brief appearance later in the series, with his final episode airing in 2008). During his tenure, he confessed to an affair with a minor student, narrowly escaped being killed, flirted with several female staff members, and orchestrated a scheme to entice academically gifted students into enrolling. Quite the rollercoaster ride!
Eddie Lawson – Neil Morrissey
In the beginning of season 3, back in 2007, Eddie, both a math teacher and deputy head, made his appearance on the show. He remained a part of it until the conclusion of season 4 in 2009. One might wonder why he chose to leave so quickly. As expected in a soap opera, it was due to romantic complications – having spent an entire season trying to conceal his feelings for headteacher Rachel Mason, he eventually entered into a relationship with her sister Melissa. After bidding farewell to Waterloo Road, Morrissey has continued to impress with numerous notable roles on shows such as Line of Duty and The Night Manager.
Izzie Redpath – Jill Halfpenny
As a devoted film enthusiast, I’ve always admired the captivating character of Izzie, portrayed by the talented actress Kathryn Hunt. Izzie, a drama teacher and mother to Chlo Grainger and Mika, graced our screens from the very first episode of that beloved series, until her heart-wrenching demise in the finale of season 2 back in 2007. In a tragic turn of events, she was fatally stabbed by the menacing Jed Seddon while bravely shielding her superior, headteacher Jack. Prior to this unfortunate incident, Izzie had been involved in a complex relationship with her colleague Tom Clarkson, who had once been married to her dearest friend. More recently, Kathryn has continued to shine on both the big and small screens, most notably as a sharp-tongued TV producer in the BBC’s adaptation of Everything I Know About Love.
Rachel Mason – Eva Pope
Stepping into the tumultuous world of Waterloo Road as its third headteacher in 2007, I found myself grappling with a position that seemed more like a poisoned chalice than a role of authority. My tenure, which spanned seasons 3 to 5 until my departure in 2010, was marked by a major fire and an unusually disgruntled governor who decided to take matters into his own hands by driving a digger through the school. Quite the experience, I must say!
Max Tyler – Tom Chambers
In season 5, Max became the executive headmaster of the merged school, which included John Fosters, after speaking negatively about the previous headteacher Rachel to the local authority. However, his strict management style was met with disapproval from both staff and students, leading to his departure after only 10 episodes in 2009. Since then, Max, portrayed by actor Tom Chambers, has appeared on Father Brown and Casualty, and is one of several Waterloo Road stars who have competed on Strictly Come Dancing, ultimately winning the sixth series with partner Camilla Dallerup.
Tom Clarkson – Jason Done
One of Waterloo Road’s best-loved and longest-standing teachers, Tom started out in season 1 and continued on the show until season 8, with his final episode airing in 2013. As well as taking in the Grainger sisters after their mother’s death, he later learned he was the father of pupil Josh Stevenson, who joined Waterloo Road after the merger with John Fosters. His time on the show ended in dramatic fashion, when he fell from the school roof while trying to talk student Kyle Stack down.
Steph Haydock – Denise Welch
From seasons 1 to 5, Steph, a main cast member, wasn’t the most effective teacher, as she struggled to manage her classes and consistently produced poor exam results. Yet, she was well-liked among staff, despite her penchant for gossip sometimes landing her in hot water. In season 6, she made a comeback over two episodes broadcasted in 2010, assisting her former colleague Grantly while his wife battled dementia. Following this, Welch went on to act in Benidorm and Hollyoaks, and continues to be a recurring guest on the Loose Women panel.
Maggie Budgen – Melanie Hill
Starting as a dinner lady in the school during its seventh season in 2011, Maggie eventually advanced to become a food technology teacher. She developed a relationship with Grantly and married him shortly after the school was transferred from Rochdale to Scotland (let’s not delve into that). Maggie remained a part of the show until it concluded in 2015, taking on the role of the head of the boarding house following her husband’s demise in season 8. Nowadays, you can find Hill portraying Cathy Matthews on Coronation Street.
Bolton Smilie – Tachia Newall
Originally portrayed as another troublemaker at Waterloo Road, Bolton actually had a softer side, joining the series in 2007 and leaving in 2010 following his time in sixth form. Initially known for his class pranks, he earned respect during the school fire when he bravely rescued trapped students from a corridor. Prior to his departure in 2010, he and his love interest Sambuca Kelly were crowned prom king and queen. He made a brief return to the show in season 8, causing trouble after deserting the army.
Finn Sharkey – Jack McMullen
In the latter part of season 5 (debuting in 2010), a character named Finn entered Waterloo Road. Known for his mischievous ways, Finn was notorious for attempting to torch Chris Mead’s car at his old school. He formed a bond with Josh and later got entangled in romantic tangles with several girls, including Sambuca. His love story unfolded with fellow student Trudi Siddiqui. By the end of season 7 in 2012, Finn bid farewell to Waterloo Road, setting off for Canada alongside Trudi. McMullen.
Josh Stevenson – William Rush
In Season 5, Josh transitioned to Waterloo Road, following its amalgamation with his former school. During this time, he discovers that English teacher Tom Clarkson is his father, a revelation that initially leads him to misbehave (influenced by his friend Finn). However, their relationship evolves positively, as Tom offers him support when Josh confesses his homosexuality in Season 6. The character of Josh remained on the show until Season 8, during which he revisited the school to retake his exams.
Ruby Fry – Elizabeth Berrington
In season 5, Ruby, the food technology instructor, joined the school. She experienced an outstanding career transformation during this series, deciding to leave at the end of the next season in 2011 to dedicate herself fully to her writing endeavors. Berrington’s professional journey has also flourished: she was recently featured in HBO’s drama The Nevers and BBC One’s police drama The Responder, in addition to playing Princess Anne opposite Kristen Stewart’s portrayal of Princess Diana in the film Spencer.
Lindsay James – Jenna Coleman
Coleman’s tenure on Waterloo Road was brief yet undeniably filled with high-stakes drama: her character, introduced during the first half of season 5 in 2009, ultimately faced a murder charge for killing her father. It was later disclosed that her mother had attempted to shield her by taking the blame instead. Now, Coleman is most recognized for her roles as Clara, companion to Doctor Who, and the young monarch Victoria in the ITV period drama. She’s also set to appear in Netflix’s version of The Sandman.
Jonah Kirby – Lucien Laviscount
Jonah Laviscount was part of the show for just its sixth season that aired from 2010 to 2011, yet he left a lasting impact due to a questionable storyline where his character fell in love with his Spanish teacher and ran off to Gretna Green, Scotland to get married. Following this, Laviscount has been seen on shows like Trollied and Skins, and later built an acting career across the Atlantic with roles in Scream Queens and Riverdale spin-off Katy Keene. His most notable role so far is in the latest season of Netflix’s Emily in Paris.
Jodie ‘Scout’ Allen – Katie McGlynn
Actor McGlynn, best known from Coronation Street, made her breakthrough appearance on Waterloo Road as Scout, a character who emerges from a challenging upbringing and goes to great lengths to support her younger brother financially. She debuted on the show in season 7 during 2011, and alongside others, Scout relocated to Scotland with the school in season 8. Her last episode was broadcast in 2013, at which point it was disclosed that Scout intended to attend a teacher training college.
Sambuca Kelly – Holly Kenny
Hailing from a name inspired by her mother’s beloved beverage, Sambuca made her appearance on the series during season 4 in 2009. Despite frequently finding herself entangled in disputes due to her friends, she was adored by many and her story arc involving her death from brain cancer in season 7 left viewers teary-eyed. Following her departure in 2011, Kenny has gone on to feature in numerous productions such as Shameless, The Mill (a period piece on Channel 4), and In The Club, a drama by Kay Mellor.
Chris Mead – William Ash
Previously a lawyer, Chris – a science teacher at Waterloo Road since season 5 in 2009 – had a fondness for expensive cars and fashionable attire. He quickly became beloved by both students and faculty members. However, his involvement in the personal lives of his pupils and inability to uphold professional boundaries led to his resignation midway through season 7. His final episode was broadcast in 2011.
Siobhan Mailey – Phoebe Dynevor
Prior to achieving fame through Bridgerton, Dynevor initially gained recognition when she landed her breakout part in the fifth season of Waterloo Road, portraying Siobhan, a new student introduced following the merger with John Foster’s school. Over the course of 20 episodes from 2009 to 2010, she remained a regular character on the show.
Michael Byrne – Alec Newman
Michael joined the school during Season 7 (broadcast in 2011), with the intention of improving its image. He played a significant role in relocating Waterloo Road to Scotland, but his tenure was short-lived, as he departed at the end of Season 8 following a disagreement over the school’s PRU. After parting ways with the show in 2013, Newman has made appearances in series such as Shetland, Showtrial, and the latest installment of ITV’s Unforgotten.
Guy Braxton – Regé-Jean Page
In a parallel career path, Regé-Jean Page, who stars alongside Dynevor on Bridgerton, had an early acting role on Waterloo Road as well. However, their tenures on the show were five years apart. The character he portrayed, the future Duke of Hastings, joined in the 10th and final series, where his character, Guy, was a newly qualified teacher. In a surprising twist, it was revealed that one of his new students was none other than his estranged sister. His episodes were broadcasted in the year 2015.
Denzil Kelly – Reece Douglas
Denzil, Sambuca’s younger brother, faced challenges at Waterloo Road. He debuted in season 4 of 2009 and met an unfortunate end in a car accident during the last episode of season 7, which was broadcast in 2012 as the school transitioned from Rochdale to Scotland. Since his role on the series, Douglas has made appearances on ITV’s The Bay and is expected to feature alongside Adrian Dunbar in the forthcoming police thriller titled Ridley.
