Waterloo Road confirms comedian Jon Richardson casting after ‘retirement’ joke on social media

Yesterday, followers of comedian Jon Richardson were taken aback when he disclosed his intention to step away from the comedy scene on various social platforms.

Richardson initially indicated he was going into teaching as his chosen career path, but it appears things have taken a different turn for him.

It turns out that Richardson’s announcement about becoming a teacher was actually a pre-April Fool’s Day joke. In reality, Richardson won’t be teaching but will be playing a teacher role as he joins the cast of the BBC’s show “Waterloo Road,” which is set in a school.

In the grand cinematic world I inhabit, I’m thrilled to share that come the 16th season of our beloved series later this year, I will make my debut! As for the specifics of my character, they’re currently wrapped in a mystery, so all we can do is eagerly anticipate the unfolding narrative.

In a statement, Richardson expressed that joining Waterloo Road feels more like a wish fulfilled than a dream, as his childhood dreams about school often involved not completing assignments or wearing the right uniform.

As a movie lover who once harbored dreams of becoming a teacher, I’m eager to see if this role will finally lay those aspirations to rest. Instead of constantly teasing my friends and family with quizzes about what I’ve been saying or warning tour audiences that their time might be better spent elsewhere, perhaps now I can just enjoy the art of cinema without worrying about educating others.

Simultaneously, Cameron Roach, the creator of Rope Ladder Fiction and producer for Waterloo Road, commented: “Waterloo Road aims to perfectly blend intense emotions with humor, and we believe we’ve found a winning combination by hiring Jon Richardson as a new media studies teacher at Waterloo Road.

Apart from boasting exceptional comedic delivery, Jon’s dramatic skills are equally impressive, offering a mix of unexpected surprises and heartfelt joy to his followers. The upcoming period guarantees a rollercoaster ride of laughter, tears, and an abundance of chaos.

Richardson is set to join the existing cast, which includes Lindsey Coulson and Jason Merrells. Notably, Jason Merrells has been promoted to regular main cast member starting from season 16, having previously appeared as a guest star in role of Jack Rimmer during season 15.

Richardson primarily gained recognition through his comedic roles, often seen on programs like Taskmaster and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

Regarding his acting career, he’s been featured in one episode of Drunk History UK and portrayed himself in Meet the Richardsons.

Or, more informally:
He’s acted in an episode of Drunk History UK and played a role based on himself in Meet the Richardsons.

It’s not new that comedians appear on Waterloo Road; in fact, Jason Manford was part of the series in 2024, portraying headmaster Steve Savage for a single season.
