As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for stories inspired by real-life experiences, I find “We Might Regret This” to be an intriguing and refreshing addition to the BBC’s comedy-drama lineup. The bond between Kyla Harris and Lee Getty, who drew from their shared past as they navigated through unconventional roles, adds a layer of authenticity that is often lacking in scripted series.
The creators behind “We Might Regret This,” Kyla Harris and Lee Getty, have disclosed the true-to-life aspects that served as inspiration for their fresh BBC comedy-drama debuting tonight.
The storyline centers around Freya (Harris), a quadriplegic artist, who begins a romantic journey with Abe (Darren Boyd). However, she struggles to establish limits after bringing on board Jo (Elena Saurel), her spontaneous best friend, as her round-the-clock assistant and caretaker.
The television series may be a work of fiction, but it’s inspired by authentic events that transpired between Harris and his assistant Getty during her time working for him many years ago.
Getty took on the role despite knowing Harris for just a short period of time, and they both concede it was quite a gamble. However, this risk proved beneficial, leading not only to a profound friendship but also to a BBC sitcom.
Earlier this month, Harris stated during the We Might Regret This launch event that “she’s been venturing into risky situations with me, and we’ve been doing so together” since then.
Getty shared: “During our travels across the globe, we accumulated some extraordinary experiences, both as companions and professionals. It dawned on us that the things we encountered were quite exceptional and distinct.”
“In a restroom designed for individuals with disabilities, we found ourselves engaging in unusual activities. We felt like we were experiencing an extraordinary level of closeness, and we wondered if there was some meaningful way to express or symbolize this unique bond.”
Harris reminisced about a specific event that had caused them both to laugh heartily, further solidifying their belief that they could create a comedic script based on their antics.
She recounted, “At one point, it seems we were both soaked from heavy rain inside a vehicle, and I had an urgent need to use the restroom. So, I asked Lee for assistance. Amazingly, she not only helped me with a catheter but also asked, ‘Where on earth is the jug?'”
“I recently urinated into the car’s cup holder, which caused us to burst out laughing. We then mused, ‘This is something people should witness.'”
In the series, the role of Jo, a character based on fiction and portrayed by Saurel (from Industry), is present. This character serves as a close confidant and an unusual assistant to the show’s main character, but Getty, who is the co-creator, does not physically appear on screen.
In addition to its stellar cast, “We Might Regret This” features Aasiya Shah (known for her role in Bloods), Edward Bluemel (recognized from My Lady Jane), Emma Sidi (renowned for Ghosts), Sally Phillips (a familiar face from Veep) and Jessie Mei Li (acclaimed in Shadow and Bone).
We Might Regret This airs Mondays at 10pm on BBC Two. Stream all episodes now on iPlayer.
