We Were Oh So Close to Getting Soul Sacrifice 2 from Sony

Soul Sacrifice, and especially its expanded re-release Soul Sacrifice Delta, was superb.

Originally available only on the PlayStation Vita, a platform that some might not have experienced, this game emerged as Sony aimed to bridge the void created when Monster Hunter abruptly shifted its exclusivity from PlayStation Portable (PSP) to Nintendo 3DS.

The game boasted a unique, gloom-laden fantasy aesthetic, and its mechanics often revolved around the somber theme of “sacrifice.” In battle, you might find yourself losing limbs, but with that loss came crippling penalties. This game was nothing short of remarkable.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news from an outstanding episode of Sacred Symbols (though it may be behind a paywall). Former Sony first-party boss, Shuhei Yoshida, has confirmed that a sequel was in the works, along with a successor to the captivating game resembling Monster Hunter, Freedom Wars.

Originally, we were developing Soul Sacrifice 2 and Freedom Wars 2, but due to financial constraints, we had to halt those projects and shift our focus towards PlayStation 4 development instead,” he disclosed.

Earlier this year, Freedom Wars was remastered and rereleased on both the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Interestingly, Sony has been granting licenses for a number of its intellectual properties to partner company Bandai Namco, which is also responsible for re-releases of Patapon and Everybody’s Golf.

Undeniably, the disappointing sales of the PS Vita impacted the fate of these two projects. It’s unfortunate that Soul Sacrifice 2 and Freedom Wars 2 didn’t get a chance to be developed for the PS4, as we think they would have thrived on that platform.
