“We would ask you to stay with us, that is really important to us.” STALKER 2 devs promise patches for the game’s most unique open-world feature

What you need to know

  • GSC Game World’s new open-world survival shooter STALKER 2 has a system called A-Life 2.0 that controls how NPCs in The Zone spawn in, move around, and interact with each other and the player in The Zone.
  • However, it’s not fully working as intended right now, with players reporting NPCs spawning extremely close to players at times and groups of stalkers only moving around The Zone rarely.
  • GSC has apologized for the issues, but promises that it’s heard all the feedback and is working to improve A-Life with patches and updates.
  • One of the studio’s community managers, Mol1t, stated that “we are fixing it and we will fix it. This is a very high-priority thing for us and we work on it.”

As a tech enthusiast with a soft spot for open-world shooters, I’ve been eagerly awaiting STALKER 2 for years, and finally getting my hands on it has been an exhilarating experience. The game is a testament to GSC Game World’s resilience in the face of adversity, delivering a compelling open-world survival shooter that stands out from the crowd.

After a six-year delay, GSC Game World’s long-awaited open-world survival shooter STALKER 2 has been released, and it’s generally excellent. The gritty, hardcore first-person shooter mechanics, the persistent survival elements, and the immersive atmosphere combine to create one of the most gripping open-world shooting experiences yet. However, some technical issues and balancing problems with mutants slightly detract from the overall experience. Despite these flaws, STALKER 2 is a significant achievement for a studio that has faced considerable challenges due to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

One aspect of the Xbox and Windows PC exclusive feature that hasn’t quite lived up to expectations is A-Life 2.0 – an AI system designed to control the dynamic spawning and movement of stalkers and mutants within The Zone, as well as their reactions to the environment. It can be quite impressive when functioning correctly; its impact has led to some fascinating encounters for me, such as a situation where I and several friendly NPCs were ambushed by a patrol of soldiers, followed by two packs of mutants hostile towards each other and all the stalkers present appearing after being attracted by some sort of signal. However, it frequently fails to operate as intended.

In some instances, players have mentioned that the A-Life system places enemies such as bandits or mutants very close to them, which was a similar experience during my STALKER 2 review gameplay. Additionally, it seems less common to observe NPC squads traversing between locations of interest compared to earlier STALKER games. This can make A-Life 2.0 feel like a step back from the original system, despite its significant influence on combat situations. I believe it offers more impact in battles, but its implementation may seem less frequent than expected.

After the release of STALKER 2 this past week, feedback regarding A-Life’s problems has been quite explicit. Fortunately, GSC Game World seems open to these comments and assures us that enhancements will be made in upcoming updates.

Greetings! Our team is currently working on new updates, including improvements for our A-Life system. We value your input and apologize if your initial gameplay experience with certain features was less than optimal. We kindly ask for your patience as we continue this journey together, as your continued support means a lot to us.

Among the team of community managers at GSC, one individual named Mol1t stepped forward on the official STALKER Discord, addressing player worries and emphasizing that the developers are committed to fixing the A-Life feature to ensure it functions optimally.

They mentioned that they won’t delve into intricate explanations because currently, A-life (which should make the Zone feel lively and authentic) isn’t functioning as intended. However, they are working diligently to resolve the issues, and once they do, their actions will demonstrate their progress. Essentially, improving A-life is a top priority for them.

It’s great that developers are focusing on fixing and enhancing A-Life 2.0 for STALKER 2, which could make the game even more captivating than it currently is. Unfortunately, those playing at launch might not get a fully functioning system, but given how unique A-Life is to STALKER and since there’s little else like it in gaming, it may be worth waiting for updates before starting your playthrough.

Remarkably, STALKER 2 has achieved great success despite some A-Life glitches, climbing high in the Steam rankings and even surpassing the significant milestone of one million copies sold within two days after release. This is quite noteworthy given that the game is also accessible on Game Pass for both Xbox and PC users, and I predict its sales and player base will likely expand even more over this weekend.

The highly anticipated game, STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl, is now available on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. This year, it’s been recognized as one of the top Xbox games and top PC games. It retails for $59.99, but currently, you can find a discount on CDKeys. Additionally, you can enjoy playing it through Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
