Once again, Nevermore Academy is set to open its doors, as Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for the eagerly awaited second season of the sensational series, “Wednesday“. The release of this trailer signals the approaching comeback of Jenna Ortega portraying the legendary, death-fascinated Wednesday Addams. This means that the show is gearing up for its return after a significant hiatus. Following the unprecedented global success of the inaugural season, which broke streaming records and became a cultural phenomenon, anticipation for Wednesday’s second year is sky-high. The trailer marks the start of the buzz surrounding Season 2, hinting at a darker, more horror-filled storyline that delves further into Addams Family lore and introduces several new characters to “Wednesday“‘s universe.
In the debut season of Wednesday, directed by Tim Burton, there was a global captivation that transformed Ortega into a familiar face and sparked numerous viral sensations. Ortega, who is also involved as a producer in Season 2, has hinted at an enhanced creative drive for the upcoming episodes. This ambition stems from the team feeling inspired by the initial triumph to explore even more daring territories, especially when it comes to delving deeper into the show’s genre foundations.
The lineup for Season 2 hints at an enlargement of the show’s universe. Characters returning to the scene include Ortega, Emma Myers (Enid), Joy Sunday (Bianca Barclay), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Morticia Addams), Luis Guzmán (Gomez Addams), Isaac Ordonez (Pugsley Addams), and Fred Armisen (Uncle Fester). These familiar faces will be joined by several notable newcomers, such as Steve Buscemi, who will play a series regular. Additionally, we’ll see Billie Piper, Thandiwe Newton, Haley Joel Osment, Christopher Lloyd, and Lady Gaga joining the cast for the first time in Season 2. Lastly, Christopher Lloyd, known for his portrayal of Uncle Fester in the ’90s Addams Family films, will make a guest appearance. To round it off, music sensation Lady Gaga is set to appear as Wednesday for the first time in Season 2.
What We Know About Wednesday‘s Darker Season 2 Return
The trailer for Season 2 of Wednesday suggests a major shift from the initial season’s murder mystery storyline. As hinted by showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, the new season delves deeper into the history of the Addams Family, promising a more intricate and ominous journey for Wednesday. This aligns with Jenna Ortega’s earlier statements emphasizing an increased emphasis on horror aspects. Ortega also mentioned brainstorming ideas for a whole episode inspired by slasher films, as well as numerous visual references to classic horror movies. In fact, she even mentioned a chilling image involving Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) that mirrored a scene from Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket.
As a movie reviewer, I’m excited to share that Season 2 of Nevermore promises substantial character growth for our beloved students returning from last season. Emma Myers, who captivated us all as the vivacious werewolf roommate Enid Sinclair, admitted her initial apprehension about reprising her role following the extended break. “I was a bit anxious to return,” she confessed, recalling moments from Season 1 and questioning her ability to recreate that performance now. However, Enid has blossomed and grown more comfortable in her own skin.
Ortega confirmed that Myers’ character is set to be more assertive this time around, suggesting that the intriguing dynamic between the gothic detective and her vibrant companion remains a crucial aspect of the show, even if Wednesday herself would never acknowledge it.
It’s evident that Netflix has high hopes for “Wednesday” becoming a cornerstone series. As early as March, showrunner Ortega suggested that the writers were already brainstorming ideas for a possible Season 3, indicating confidence in the show’s long-term success before even the second season has premiered. With the trailer now released, it’s easy to see why there’s so much anticipation, as the upcoming Nevermore adventure appears set to outshine the first season in every way.
Wednesday Season 2 is expected to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2025.
