Donald and Melania Trump received a cordial greeting from President Joe Biden and his wife, Doctor Jill Biden.
On January 20, 2025, the new first couple was warmly welcomed by the Bidens on the White House’s front porch. As the Trumps exited their vehicle, President Biden, as reported by Washington Post journalist Matt Viser, extended a friendly welcome saying, “You’re back home!
8 years ago, the warm interaction between the Bidens and the Trumps occurred following a slightly tense moment between Melania and her spouse, along with President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, during the 2017 inauguration ceremony.
During their meeting, Melania and Michelle’s encounter wasn’t entirely smooth when Melania offered Michelle a blue box. Later on, Michelle explained that the gift, which turned out to be a beautiful frame, wasn’t what she had anticipated.
During her August 2018 interview on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show,” Michelle explained, “there are many rules or protocols in place since it’s like a diplomatic visit. They tell you exactly what to do and where to stand. It was the first time I received such a gift, so I was wondering, ‘What should I do with this gift?’
She added, “Everyone departed, no one dared approach the box. Meanwhile, I pondered, ‘Should we include the photo along with it?’
However, her husband and former president Obama soon stepped in to save the day.
“He grabbed the box and took it back inside,” Michelle recalled. “But everybody cleared out.”
At the 2025 Inauguration Day, it’s been confirmed that Michelle won’t be present, despite the presence of notable figures such as former presidents Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, George W. Bush and Laura Bush, along with tech leaders like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, who will also attend alongside the former president Obama.

Prior to giving her speech, Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar presided over Biden and Trump as they exited the White House. Speaking about her role as chairperson of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, she stated, “Although we have significant disagreements on policies and such matters, I aim to ensure this event runs smoothly.
New York City mayor Eric Adams worked the room at the Capitol.
