Although the fourth season of Welcome to Wrexham is still fresh on Disney+ with its latest episodes debuting this month, the series’ continuation has already been officially announced.
The sports documentary series on FX has just been confirmed for a fifth installment, and additionally, they are developing a new spin-off titled “Necaxa,” in collaboration with Disney+ Latin America.
In contrast to the main series that focuses on the Welsh football team owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as they prepare for their Championship debut in season 5, a spin-off will introduce a new chapter with Reynolds, McElhenney, and Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria, who are partners in the Mexican football club Nacaxa.
The show, set to air this summer, follows a tumultuous and transformative period in the history of a renowned Mexican football club located in Aguascalientes, focusing on the unwavering fans who remain optimistic throughout.
According to Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, “Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds played a significant role in turning Wrexham AFC into an extraordinary sports tale. The events unfolding in Wrexham, Wales, are nothing short of enchanting.
Together with Eva Longoria, they are now joining forces to encourage and fulfill the dreams and hopes of not only the Necaxa supporters but also the community of Aguascalientes as well.
Starting this summer, we embark on an exciting adventure with Disney+ Latin America and Necaxa. Everyone is eager to witness their passion and dedication, which they will be showcasing not only in Mexico during the fifth season of Welcome to Wrexham but also as the club moves forward into the Championship – a new chapter in its enchanting tale.
Necaxa is an engaging bilingual documentary series that follows a tumultuous, transformative period filled with staff changes, critical injuries, and the unwavering determination of a football team to surpass expectations and bring hope to its home city, Aguascalientes, Mexico.
For several decades, the once dominant Club Necaxa in Mexican soccer has faced numerous challenges such as relocation, relegation struggles, and almost continual rebuilding.
