What you need to know

  • Remedy and 505 Games unveiled a brand-new game during the October Xbox Partner Preview showcase.
  • The game, titled FBC: Firebreak, is Remedy’s first attempt at making a multiplayer title and is set within the Federal Bureau of Control as it is taken to siege by otherworldly forces.
  • Players will take the role of Firebreak, an adaptable response unit tasked with eliminating the threat, as a three-person cooperative team.
  • FBC: Firebreak’s game director, Mike Kayatta, has reiterated that the game is not a DLC nor a sequel to Remedy’s prior hit game, Control, though it could be considered a spin-off as it is still within that game’s universe.

As a long-time fan of Remedy Entertainment, I’ve been through my fair share of supernatural thrill rides with their games. From Max Payne to Alan Wake, and most recently Control, they never fail to deliver an immersive, mind-bending experience that leaves me on the edge of my seat. So, when I heard about FBC: Firebreak during the October Xbox Partner Preview showcase, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and curiosity.

As a thrilled fan, I’m excited to share that during the October Xbox Partner Preview showcase, Remedy Entertainment and 505 Games revealed an exciting new addition to their roster – FBC: Firebreak! This game is a gripping three-player cooperative shooter, nestled within the captivating universe of Control.

Kayatta clarified that Firebreak isn’t related to Control DLC or a sequel. Instead, we’re intentionally steering clear from any similarities. While it could be considered a spin-off, it’s more of an innovative take on the concept. It’s not meant to be a diminished version of Control; rather, Firebreak stands independently as a complete game in its own right.

In the introductory trailer for FBC: Firebreak, we first see the Federal Bureau of Control in chaos, alternating with chilling glimpses of otherworldly creatures. As a door opens, we meet the three playable characters from the Firebreak team, each equipped uniquely. Their weapons vary from a firearm resembling an SMG but firing like a shotgun, to a massive wrench for close combat, and a peculiar, hand-cranked device that emits orbs of green slime.

In an innovative twist, Remedy equipped its Firebreak team with extra weaponry and tools, which they refer to as “supernatural enhancements”. These can function as special accessories. Thomas Puha from Remedy Communications likens them to a hidden jaguar, saying, “Imagine carrying a box; when you point it at something, you open the box, and you hope the jaguar inside doesn’t decide to attack you or your companions instead.

Players can anticipate that FBC: Firebreak will further expand on the world initially presented in Control, providing additional chances to delve deeper into the Federal Bureau of Control, The Oldest House, and encounter fresh personalities. In line with Remedy’s traditional narrative style, Firebreak is expected to offer experiences that might strike players as amusingly odd, but would be genuinely petrifying for the characters who must endure them.

In the pipeline, details about Firebreak: Firebreak (FBC) are yet to be fully disclosed, but Remedy Entertainment has hinted at a three-player cooperative shooter game. This upcoming title is primarily focused on Player vs Environment (PvE), and it’s not anticipated to be a live-service game. Instead, it will receive additional content after its initial release. Interestingly, this marks the studio’s first foray into multiplayer game development in their 30 years of existence. However, they have also confirmed that more single-player games are planned for the future.

The game titled “Firebreak” is tentatively slated for release in the year 2025. Upon its debut, it will be available on both Xbox Series X|S and personal computers. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Firebreak will be accessible on Xbox Game Pass from day one.
