As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the Minecraft Experience: Villager Rescue is a game-changer. This immersive, interactive adventure has taken the beloved digital world of Minecraft and brought it to life in ways I never thought possible.
In the realm of video games, there are numerous legendary franchises, yet scarcely (if ever) do any rival the cultural juggernaut that is Minecraft. Originally conceived as a survival-crafting game, it has since transcended these boundaries, making its expansion into real-world experiences seem almost inevitable. Recently, Xbox and Mojang Studios unveiled a novel method for individuals of all ages to engage with Minecraft, this time in the actual world.
The Minecraft Experience: Villager Rescue has officially launched in Dallas, Texas, and is now open for everyone to visit! Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it to the grand opening (Dallas isn’t exactly a stone’s throw away), but I was fortunate enough to chat with Olivier Goulet, Managing Partner and Executive Producer of Minecraft Experience, as well as Craig Leigh from Mojang, Principal Design Director. Since I didn’t get the chance for a hands-on experience, our conversation centered around what inspired this one-of-a-kind Minecraft attraction and where Xbox plans to steer it in the future.
If you just wanted to know that the Minecraft Experience is located in Dallas, then you can purchase your tickets for $65 per person directly from feverup.com. Keep reading if you’d like to learn more.
What is Minecraft Experience?
The interactive team activity called “Minecraft Experience: Villager Rescue” is a joint creation by Xbox Game Studios and Mojang Studios, along with Experience Mod LLC (the production and technology team) and Supply + Demand. In this experience, groups of up to 25 participants are invited to step into the Minecraft universe for about an hour, where they will traverse a sprawling area encompassing multiple biomes that spans over 20,000 square feet.
You don’t have to be an enthusiast of Minecraft or even know much about the game; the Minecraft Experience is designed to cater to individuals of all ages, abilities, and familiarity levels. In the Villager Rescue mission, you and your team are tasked with saving a village. To accomplish this goal, you’ll need to discover new areas, gather resources, fight off creatures, and create items necessary for curing zombie villagers of their undead condition.
The initial staging of Minecraft Experience is based in Dallas, Texas, and will continue there until approximately the first week of January 2025. Following this period, the Minecraft Experience team plans to relocate and set up shop in a different city, repeating this pattern throughout 2025 and beyond, with stops across the U.S., Europe, and Latin America. If you’re keen on taking part, tickets for the Minecraft Experience can be bought for $65 per person from feverup.com. Group discounts are available for 4-15 tickets, and an even larger reduction is offered for 16-25 tickets.
Bringing Minecraft to everyone in the real world
In our conversation, Olivier Goulet, the Managing Partner and Executive Producer of Minecraft Experience, shared his background with me. He explained that he has a history in theatre and rock-n-roll, but more importantly, he’s all about captivating audiences through stories and experiences. As he watched his children play Minecraft, an idea sparked – to create such an experience and then bring it to reality.
In the course of his distinguished career, Goulet has been instrumental in developing and producing a multitude of shows, events, and television projects, such as various performances by Cirque Du Soleil and concerts for artists like Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, and Bon Jovi. For him, the Minecraft Experience represents another exciting step towards immersing audiences further into the realm of entertainment.
In our chat, Craig Leigh – a seasoned member of Mojang Studios and the Principal Design Director of Minecraft Experience – joins Goulet. Known for his work in shaping Minecraft Legends and previously contributing to Minecraft Earth, this is yet another chance for him to introduce an exciting, fresh adventure into the world of Minecraft for the public.
In contrast to the unfortunate fate of Minecraft Earth, Minecraft Experience seems to be more deeply rooted in our everyday world. As Leigh put it, “There’s no more augmented reality, just plain reality.
It turns out that crafting the current version of the Minecraft Experience was a complex, challenging task requiring a good deal of creativity and technical skill. Throughout this process, I gained valuable insights into the technology powering the Minecraft Experience, which is designed to stimulate various senses, including touch, vision, and hearing. Interestingly enough, I even inquired if the Minecraft Experience might someday engage our sense of smell as well, and the response left me quite intrigued.
Leigh echoed my sentiment, “So, what scent does a Creeper have? Frankly, I’d rather not find out.” And as for the Creeper, I assumed its aroma to be a mix of gunpowder and lightning.
Despite Goulet offering a contrasting perspective, he suggested that “[the technology] isn’t quite ready at the moment, but it’s an area we’re beginning to delve into. There’s no reason we won’t tackle it down the line,” he clarified. However, let me clarify first; The Minecraft Experience is a fusion of multiple technologies. But you might wonder, how does it operate?
The adventure kicks off utilizing the Interaction Orb in Minecraft Experience. Each participant receives an individual Interaction Orb, which they’ll manipulate using motion controls to engage with the game environment. This Orb isn’t just capable of precisely following your unique movements and gestures (even amidst a crowd of 24 others), it also delivers visual and tactile cues through RGB lights and vibration sensors that react to your actions and fresh occurrences.
Beyond the Orb of Interaction, the Minecraft Experience utilizes a ton of technology to make everything come together, and it’s both seamless so you never see behind the scenes during the event and modular, so everything can be easily packed and moved to the next city. Touch comes into play through the Orb of Interaction and the plethora of physical props and environments. Sight enters the picture through projected screens and digital interfaces. Sound is introduced through over 100 meticulously placed speakers that provide precise, natural 3D audio during the entire experience.
During your time in the Minecraft Experience, you’ll venture into various biomes, each providing a distinct adventure. Some might employ touchscreens or arcade-like controls, while others could leverage LiDAR technology for more accurate movement tracking. Leigh explained that the technology used in creating this experience was specifically developed for it over the past two years to achieve all these fantastic features.
The final product offers a harmonious encounter that appears to be striking a chord with the initial group of guests. Speaking about our usual environment, it’s Minecraft, living and working within it, yet witnessing visitors amazed by the technology is simply astonishing, as shared by Leigh.
Goulet explained that they aimed to make this resource available to everyone, not just for those who play Minecraft. Instead, it serves as an introduction to Minecraft for newcomers. It caters to families and parents seeking a better understanding of Minecraft. Moreover, it’s designed to re-engage longtime players with the game.
Technology alone wasn’t enough; however, The Minecraft Experience is more than just a piece of it. This experience represents an authentic part of the larger Minecraft world, requiring a faithful portrayal of its essence. As Goulet explained, “This is another way to immerse yourself in the game, but it’s not meant to replace the original.” The key to this endeavor was recognizing that the Minecraft universe is truly expansive – not just in terms of influence, but in actual size as well.
As an analyst, I found it intriguing to grapple with a technical conundrum: the vastness of the virtual Minecraft universe exceeds human scale, given that each block measures 1 meter by 1 meter or approximately 3.3 feet by 3.3 feet – quite cumbersome for our human standards. However, The Minecraft Experience cleverly addresses this issue by reducing everything to 60% of its original size. This meticulous work on creating props for mobs, environments, and more within the Minecraft Experience has been instrumental in bridging the gap between this digital world and our own, making it accessible in various spheres.
Initially, I was scheduled to converse with Torfi Frans Olafsson, who serves as Creative Director of Entertainment at Mojang Studios. However, Leigh stepped in for him instead. Torfi is a renowned figure within the Minecraft community and has been instrumental in both ‘The Minecraft Experience’ and ‘A Minecraft Movie’. Yes, you might have heard about the upcoming live-action Minecraft movie featuring Jack Black and Jason Mamoa. It’s worth noting that this film project isn’t completely disconnected from ‘The Minecraft Experience’.
It appears that Leigh and Olaffson collaborate frequently, communicating daily about finding innovative methods to introduce Minecraft into our realm. According to Leigh, who shared this with me, they have maintained consistency in scale for the movie set, props, and other elements by using Minecraft as a model. While ‘A Minecraft Movie’ will offer us an audience a passive viewing experience, the Minecraft Experience offers a chance for active participation, immersing oneself in the world of Minecraft. However, their work on this project is not yet complete.
Where does Minecraft Experience go from here?
During our chat, Leigh emphasized that Minecraft is not just a simple game; it’s a massive, renowned entertainment empire.
Villager Rescue marks the initial release of what we call ‘Minecraft Experience.’ We’re just beginning to tap into its potential… Our ultimate aim is to find fresh and innovative ways to engage with this brand.” Goulet added, confirming that future Minecraft Experiences will indeed unfold unique narratives, test novel technologies, and create new avenues for players to immerse themselves in Minecraft. Essentially, it signifies that the Minecraft Experience is set to be a permanent feature.
In essence, as technology progresses, we’ll keep exploring fresh territories, not for a gimmick or marketing ploy, but more like a series of exciting attractions in a traveling theme park, Leigh clarified. The Minecraft Experience has set sail in Dallas, TX and will be there till the start of the new year. However, Leigh and Goulet are already looking ahead to what’s next – not just new experiences, but also new destinations.
Craig mentioned that they’re currently scouting for future locations for their upcoming project, The Minecraft Experience. He reassured everyone that the experience will expand and eventually reach various parts of the globe, including North America (Dallas is the first stop), Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Each location will host the event for 15-20 weeks at a time, meaning they’ve already planned out several years for this venture.
Additionally, Goulet subtly suggested potential advancements for the Minecraft Experience, going beyond my lighthearted remark about scents. He alluded to other attractions incorporating bursts of air and additional effects to amplify the overall sensory immersion.
Minecraft Experience could be a rolling snowball, progressively growing and evolving as it continues down its path, and Goulet’s production team is ready for it. “We’re there to upgrade. We’re there to listen to the guests and the visitors and make sure that as this evolves, we’re going to get better and better. We’re going to get much more focused on this,” Goulet said toward the end of our discussion.
I must confess, I felt a bit let down as I missed the initial showing of Minecraft Experience: Villager Rescue. Still, I remain optimistic that I’ll get a chance to witness it in the future. From what Leigh and Goulet have shared about their work and the enthusiasm they exude, I believe this attraction has a bright future ahead.
Perhaps one day, the Minecraft Experience could establish permanent locations as well as continuing its touring exhibitions. The success of this venture hinges on how effectively it can immerse participants in the unique Minecraft environment, transporting them into a world that countless individuals have invested significant amounts of their digital time.
