Wesley Snipes Breaks Two Guinness World Records For Playing Blade

As a long-time Marvel fan who grew up watching Wesley Snipes’ iconic portrayal of Blade, this latest development has me absolutely thrilled! It’s not every day that you get to see one of your childhood heroes break Guinness World Records and make an epic comeback after nearly two decades.

For about a week now, Deadpool and Wolverine have been gracing the big screen, and it seems like everyone online knows about the movie’s array of special appearances. If you’ve somehow avoided being spoiled so far, we suggest saving this article for later… Among the numerous well-known actors who made an appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine, one of the most unexpected was Wesley Snipes as Blade. Snipes originally portrayed the character in Blade back in 1998, then reprised the role in Blade II in 2002 and Blade: Trinity in 2004. Thanks to his comeback in Deadpool and Wolverine, Snipes has now surpassed Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to hold the Guinness World Record for the longest-running live-action portrayal of a Marvel hero.

Previously, the record was held by Patrick Stewart, who initially portrayed Professor X in X-Men (2000) and most recently reprised the role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Interestingly, Hugh Jackman made his debut as Wolverine in the same year with X-Men (2000), while his performance in Deadpool & Wolverine left many believing he might take the lead. However, Snipes’ unexpected role in the film grants him a two-year advantage over Jackman. Although Jackman has played Wolverine in more films, it is crucial to note that this record pertains to years, not screen time.

Beyond setting the longest tenure as a live-action Marvel character for Snipes, he also claimed the record for the most extensive absence between portrayals of a Marvel film character. Since his last performance as the character in Blade: Trinity (2004), it’s been nearly 20 years. Earlier, Alfred Molina held this distinction with a 17-year span playing Doc Ock, from Spider-Man 2 to Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Snipes discussed his notable appearance in the upcoming film featuring Deadpool and Wolverine.

As a long-time admirer, I’ve had some fascinating chats over the years, some deep and meaningful while others were more casual. However, I felt it was time for me to explore new topics, which is perfectly fine. I participated in three of these discussions, and I believe they turned out quite well. Not bad at all… So, let’s venture into fresh pastures and seek out even greater adventures ahead!

“Snipes expressed his surprise at returning to Marvel, stating, ‘I never thought it would happen.’ He continued, ‘I didn’t believe we could pull it off. I wasn’t sure Marvel or Disney were interested, especially with Mahershala Ali already cast for the next version… It seemed illogical to me, but when an unexpected call from Ryan Reynolds after 20 years came in, I knew I had to answer. I was curious about what he wanted to discuss.’ He shared that Reynolds presented a unique idea, and upon agreement, they moved forward with the project. ‘If you’re on board, we’re on board,’ they said, leading us to where we are now.”
