"We've been wanting to address the Bolter family for a while," Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is getting Public Test Servers in 2025 — and there's big gameplay changes coming soon.

What you need to know

  • Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 recently got a large content update adding a new Operation, as well as the Lethal difficulty and a variety of gameplay balance changes.
  • In response to player feedback, the developers at Saber Interactive are rolling back some of these changes, while also planning a comprehensive buff for several weapons in the game.
  • The developers are also planning to implement Public Test Servers in 2025, allowing players to test changes and provide feedback before an update launches for everyone.

As a seasoned Space Marine veteran with countless hours under my belt, I can’t help but feel the thrill of excitement every time Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 updates its arsenal. The recent content drop, introducing the Tyranid Bio-Titan in a new Operation, was just the latest chapter in this never-ending war.

War never ends and always changes.

On Wednesday, Saber Interactive posted an update on Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 addressing the recent player feedback after a content drop that included balance changes and a new Operation featuring a Tyranid Bio-Titan. The response to these changes wasn’t positive, so the developers are planning to reverse most of them in an upcoming hotfix set for release on Thursday. Additionally, they will be enhancing various Bolters due to their underperformance across all difficulty levels. The team also mentioned that they intend to launch Public Test Servers early next year, enabling some players to try updates before they’re available to everyone and provide feedback.

Further down, you’ll find the patch notes for update 4.1, separated by categories of topics.

An ever-changing game

As a bystander, I haven’t had the chance to engage in intense matches using the Lethal game setting yet, but I appreciate that the developers are actively listening to their players and adjusting accordingly based on feedback.

It’s wise to use test servers because they help prevent issues like the roll problem that arose recently. With Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 already selling over 4.5 million copies, I can only hope the developers continue to release updates and fixes at their current pace.

Additionally, I strongly advocate for incorporating High Dynamic Range (HDR) functionality into the game. During my review process, I found that the absence of HDR was one of my primary concerns. Given the game’s current success, it seems plausible that this feature could be integrated into future updates.

Still, I’m having a blast taking out the Hierophant Bio-Titan. The newest Operation is a fair bit harder than the other six, but that’s not a bad thing.

The much-anticipated sequel to Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, titled Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, is now released on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5. Notably, this game supports cross-play across all platforms in Operations mode, and console-specific cross-play within Player vs Player (PvP) sessions.
