What are Flying Wyverns in Monster Hunter Wilds?

In simpler terms, the Flying Wyverns in Monster Hunter Wilds are usually the most encountered Wyvern type. However, this could change as Capcom introduces new creatures and expands the game. These Wyverns are often top-tier predators, making them formidable opponents that rarely retreat when they choose to engage in a fight with other monsters. Additionally, they provide valuable materials for creating robust equipment.

In this Monster Hunter Wilds manual, learn about the Flying Wyverns and the specific types you might encounter.

Monster Hunter Wilds: All Flying Wyverns

In this classification, Monster Hunter’s dragons reside within the group known as Flying Wyverns, although there are a few exceptions like the feline Nargacuga and the enigmatic Khezu. At launch, the Wilds region initially houses five Flying Wyverns, many of which recur from previous games, accompanied by two brand-new inhabitants, one of which serves as the Wilds’ main monster.

Rey Dau

In the course of the main storyline, you’ll meet Rey Dau first – a formidable electric wyvern. Given its nature, it shouldn’t come as a shock that this beast is thunder-attuned, capable of stunning you with an electrical attack and finishing off with a destructive move if you’re not vigilant. However, there’s a catch: Rey Dau is vulnerable to ice attacks, but unfortunately, you won’t be able to use them until after you’ve conquered the Iceshard Cliffs.

Arkveld

In the game Wilds, Arkveld serves as their primary monster. Originally designed as a Construct, for storyline purposes, it transformed into something other than its creators intended. Its elemental type is dragon, and much like other monsters of its kind, a dragon-aligned weapon will be its Achilles’ heel. Acquiring such a weapon before your initial battle with Arkveld may require some planning, but the monster itself provides an excellent source of dragon weapons during the post-game phase.

Rathian

In the world of Monster Hunter, the regal Rathian, ruler of the dragons, makes a comeback and remains essentially unchanged from her previous appearances. While she is predominantly vulnerable to fire, watch out as she has the ability to poison you with her tail too. To combat this fierce foe, it’s advisable to carry dragon-type weapons into battle. You can find Rathian roaming the Windward Plains, Scarlet Forest, and Oilwell Basin.

Rathalos

In the world of Monster Hunter, Rathalos holds the title of Sky’s Monarch. This fearsome dragon shares some characteristics with Rathian, but instead of poison in his tail, he has it on his claws. Additionally, Rathalos tends to be a bit more aggressive. If you have successfully fought Rathian before, the same weapons should prove useful against him as well. Rathalos can often be found residing in the Scarlet Forest, Oilwell Basin, and Ruins of Wyveria.

Gravios

In simpler terms, Gravios – a colossal fire-breathing dragon – originated from the early days of Monster Hunter. Its habitats include the Oilwell Basin and the Ruins of Wyveria. Interestingly, it has more vulnerabilities than any other Flying Wyvern, making it weak against water, ice, and dragon attacks. This means you have various strategies when preparing for combat with Gravios. You can encounter this mighty beast in both the Oilwell Basin and the Ruins of Wyveria.
