As a former struggling student myself, I can empathize with Galinda’s plight when it comes to mastering magic. Elphaba’s words resonate deeply with me – “Maybe it’s harder for you to make magic because things have been kind of easy for you. So you don’t need it.” I remember how I felt when I was in her shoes, grappling with difficult concepts and feeling like I didn’t belong. However, Galinda’s offer to help Elphaba with the lion cub shows a different side to her character that Elphaba may not have been aware of before. In response, Elphaba’s promise “I won’t leave you behind again” speaks volumes about her growth and understanding of the importance of friendship and support in difficult times. Madame Morrible’s words to Munchinkland Governor Thropp (played by Andy Nyman) resonate with a sense of pride and warmth: “It’s such an honor that your other daughter be welcomed by the Wizard.” The way the characters interact in this scene is a masterclass in subtlety, as they each convey their own hopes, fears, and expectations for Elphaba’s future.

Governor Thropp replies with a mixture of hopefulness and apprehension: “Yes. Let’s just hope she makes a good impression,” which is met by assurances from Morrible and Galinda: “She will.” The way these lines are delivered, filled with faith and conviction, leaves me on the edge of my seat, eagerly waiting to see how Elphaba’s story unfolds.
