Amid the excitement building for part 2 of “Beastars”‘ final season and the upcoming anime version of “SANDA”, creator Paru Itagaki has caught fans off guard with a brand-new series, which could very well be her most unusual one yet. Announced by Itagaki on November 21st, 2024, “Taika’s Reason” was recently introduced in Weekly Shonen Champion, and here are the details we have about this mysterious crime thriller to date.

In Weekly Shonen Champion magazine, dated January 16th, 2025, Itagaki introduced the first chapter of his new manga titled “Taika’s Reason”. To celebrate its debut, the cover of this week’s issue showcases Taika, the main character who is an anthropomorphic pit bull terrier. The story revolves around him.

What is Paru Itagaki’s New Manga Taika’s Reason About?

Unlike the world of Beastars where anthropomorphic animals rule supreme, Taika’s Reason is set in an environment where humans coexist with humanized pets called dogmen and catmen. This humanization was introduced to tackle a decreasing birthrate, but it has led to an increase in crimes by dogmen and catmen, causing widespread dissent. The story revolves around a family that opposes this humanization, their fiery-tempered teenage daughter Ao, and their pet Taika.

In simple terms, Ao and her family generally live a peaceful life, making the initial part of Chapter 1 feel warm and relatable. However, the peace is shattered when Ao arrives home to discover Taika has brutally killed her father while her mother was absent. To prevent Taika from being euthanized, Ao conceals the body and keeps the murder a secret. As time goes by, her mother agrees to transform Taika into a hybrid human-canine creature. Despite this, Ao thinks their secret is secure… until one chilling moment when Taika proposes they surrender themselves to the authorities.

Although Taika’s Reason‘s unique concept might catch some off guard, it offers an engaging reading experience with a captivating opening that keeps readers hooked. Similar to Itagaki’s other series, Taika’s Reason boasts appealing artwork. While human characters are not a common sight in Itagaki’s work, the protagonist Ao stands out remarkably due to her distinctive personality and design. What truly sets this series apart is its ability to swiftly alter tones within a single chapter. As of now, Taika’s Reason remains unlicensed in English, but it has shown great potential, and we can only hope that it won’t take long before Itagaki’s fans worldwide get to enjoy it.
