What Does Tim Robinson's New HBO Show Mean for I Think You Should Leave?

As a die-hard fan who’s spent countless hours laughing at the peculiarities of I Think You Should Leave, I must say this recent news has me both excited and apprehensive. On one hand, Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin are branching out with The Chair Company on HBO, which is fantastic! On the other, I can’t help but worry that this could mean less of the quirky genius that is I Think You Should Leave.

For over two years, Netflix’s “I Think You Should Leave” has captivated and puzzled the online world with its distinctive style of sketch comedy, and a significant development has left viewers speculating. On Thursday, HBO confirmed that it has commissioned an entire series for “The Chair Company“, a new comedy series co-created by the minds behind “I Think You Should Leave”, Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin. The show will be penned and overseen by these creators, with Robinson set to star as the leading character in “The Chair Company“. This project has been under development for a few months following their previous collaboration with HBO on a pilot titled “Computer School” in 2022. As of now, there’s no confirmed release date for “The Chair Company“, but one concern arises from the latest announcement — might it signal potential delays or even an end to future seasons of “I Think You Should Leave”?

Currently, the outlook for another season of I Think You Should Leave appears quite promising. In a recent chat with Collider, Tim Robinson hinted that while Netflix hasn’t officially greenlit a fourth season yet, he remains hopeful, stating, “I don’t think it’s over.” This optimism stems from the fact that the show recently completed a successful live tour earlier this year, during which new sketches were unveiled by Robinson, Kanin, and other cast members.

What Is The Chair Company About?

At The Chair Company, following a humiliating workplace event, a character named Robinson delves into uncovering a vast conspiracy. Alongside Robinson, who is also known as William Ronald Trosper, key characters include Lake Bell, famously known for her roles in ‘Harley Quinn’ and ‘Mother Couch’, portraying Barb Trosper. Sophia Lillis, recognized from ‘It’ and ‘I Am Not Okay With This’, takes on the role of Natalie Trosper. Will Price, who has been seen in ‘After the Hunt’ and ‘A Complete Unknown’, plays Seth Trosper. Joseph Tudisco, known for ‘A Brooklyn Love Story’ and ‘FBI’, is cast as Mike Santini. Lou Diamond Phillips, who has appeared in ‘Search Party’ and ‘Easter Sunday’, will appear as guest star Jeff Levjman in the pilot episode.

According to Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President of HBO & Max Comedy Programming, the character in question carries distinct traits that are reminiscent of both Tim and Zach. This reflects a long-standing style seen in HBO comedy leads. She expressed her delight at confirming the acquisition of this entertaining series that’s sure to bring enjoyment to many.

Robinson and Kanin expressed their immense excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to produce this show in collaboration with HBO, HyperObject, as well as an exceptional group of actors and production team who have contributed significantly to its creation.
