Greetings, Windows Central readers. I hope you’re having a great day; it’s the weekend, after all.
What graphics card do you have in your PC and why?
It’s so far been a busy 2025 for anyone who follows graphics card (GPU) news.
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 in January, NVIDIA unveiled its latest generation of RTX 50-series GPUs, dubbed “Blackwell.” Over the ensuing months, they introduced several models, including the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070.
AMD delayed its Radeon RX 9000 “RDNA 4” unveiling at CES, choosing to reveal it at a later time instead.
On February 28, we received an official announcement regarding RDNA 4. Consequently, the Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070 were officially launched on March 6, 2025.
I can’t forget about Intel, which unveiled its Arc B-series “Battlemage” GPUs in December 2024.
Intel’s recently released graphics cards became available on December 13, and due to their affordable pricing and impressive 1440p performance, they were snapped up almost immediately at retailers everywhere.
Despite generally favorable GPU news for AMD and Intel, NVIDIA has faced criticism over various problems associated with its Blackwell GPUs. These issues include melted power cables, absent ROPs, defective drivers, underdeveloped AI tools, and overall performance concerns, as evidenced by the negative reviews of the RTX 5070.
The GPU market is in flux in 2025
At the moment, there’s a significant change happening in the market for graphics processing units (GPUs). Specifically, NVIDIA has decided to prioritize manufacturing their 50-series GPUs, which means that 40-series cards are becoming increasingly scarce and costly.
It seems that the AMD Radeon RX 9000 GPUs are extremely hard to come by, contrary to their initial promises of abundant stock. Instead, a lot of individuals are opting to delay their purchase and wait for the upcoming hardware rather than acquiring one of the more readily available RDNA 3 graphics cards.
Despite being launched several months ago, Intel’s Battlemage GPUs remain so affordable that they are still hard to find on the market.
Bottom line? It’s tough out there for anyone trying to land a new GPU.
In my situation, I’m anticipating the arrival of an AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT as an upgrade from my old RX 6800. Regrettably, finding one in Canada has been quite a challenge, and I’m contemplating purchasing a 5070 Ti instead because they seem to be more easily obtainable. Strange how that works out.
