What happened to Sheree Spencer? Where My Wife, My Abuser figure is now

As a seasoned movie-goer and survivor of domestic abuse myself, I must say that “My Wife, My Abuser: Captured on Camera” is a harrowing yet essential watch. The documentary sheds light on a tale of resilience and survival, one that many men experience in silence.

In their household, Sheree Spencer, a previous head of a correctional facility, inflicted 20 years of terrible mistreatment on her husband. However, it was only when their home’s surveillance cameras (nanny cams), which they themselves had installed, captured evidence of her campaign of violence, that she was eventually apprehended.

Currently available on Netflix is a documentary called “My Wife, My Abuser: Caught on Film,” which delves into the case it presents.

In March, I came across an engaging 90-minute documentary that originally aired on Channel 5, which I found particularly captivating due to its raw and honest portrayal of the domestic abuse experienced by Richard Spencer at the hands of his former wife, Sheree. The narrative was supported by video footage, written statements, audio recordings, and photographs, providing a comprehensive account of their troubled relationship.

Richard announced that he chose to tell his personal experience to bring attention to the issue of men as victims of domestic abuse.

So, what happened to Sheree and where is she now? Read on for everything you need to know.

What happened to Sheree Spencer?

Richard and Sheree Spencer seemed to be enjoying a blissful existence, residing in a prosperous abode within an upscale neighborhood in the eastern part of Yorkshire, accompanied by their trio of daughters.

However, while appearing cordial publicly, Sheree privately tormented Richard with two decades of appalling cruelty. This ordeal encompassed both physical and verbal mistreatment.

In my opinion, as a film enthusiast, I must express my concern about an unsettling event portrayed in a recent movie. The protagonist, in an alarming turn of events, is alleged to have lashed out physically. She’s said to have struck and spat at him, leaving visible marks of bruises and scratches that he concealed with makeup before stepping out. To add to the distress, she locked him inside the house. This portrayal, while it may serve as dramatic tension in a cinematic context, raises serious red flags about domestic violence, a topic we should not trivialize in real life.

In one instance, she threatened him by placing a knife against his neck, while in another incident, she inflicted harm upon him using a broken wine bottle. This violent behavior left lasting damage to his ear and elbow.

Additionally, she managed Richard’s finances in a restrictive manner, compelling him to acquire loans for vacations and unwilling to help with the expenses, while also making veiled threats to report unfounded accusations against him to the authorities if he exposed the mistreatment.

One fateful evening, Sheree made an unexpected phone call to one of Richard’s acquaintances, expressing concern that he was intoxicated and implying that she felt endangered by the situation.

When their friend visited, Richard disclosed the mistreatment he had been enduring at Sheree’s hands and presented the friend with a video they had secretly recorded using one of their nanny cameras.

The friend then went to the police on Richard’s behalf.

Back in 2015, after the arrival of our oldest child, I was part of setting up the nanny cameras in our home to ensure her safety and wellbeing.

He said: “We had two — one in the playroom and one in the bedroom. They were there for reassurance, to keep an eye out because it’s a big house.”

He continued: “It was on something like a 28-day roll, where if something new came in it would delete the old footage.”

Apart from the video clips, Richard additionally started saving audio recordings and photos documenting his wife’s growing instances of abuse.

Sheree admitted to committing abusive, manipulative behavior, as well as three instances of causing physical harm to another person.

In March 2023, she served a four-year sentence at Hull Crown Court. The crimes for which she was convicted occurred between the years 2016 and 2021.

In a recent court hearing, I had the disheartening experience of witnessing one of the most appalling instances of manipulative and domineering conduct that I’ve ever encountered.

As a devoted cinephile, I’m taking this moment to express my admiration for Mr. Spencer’s resilience, courage, and unwavering patience throughout the arduous criminal investigation. My sincere hope is that this prison sentence brings him, his cherished friends, and dear family some sense of closure, enabling them to step forward into a brighter, happier future.

“Sheree Spencer is an abusive and violent woman who subjected her husband to years of abuse.

The wrongdoings were consistently repeated across an extended span and many of them happened on the same day.

It’s my hope that the result here serves as a clear indication to all those impacted by domestic abuse and violence: regardless of your background, we are here to hear you, offer aid, and actively strive for fairness and justice.

After Spencer went to jail, Richard shared with the media his feelings: “I’ve come to accept that I may never completely heal from her abusive actions, and that the harm she caused will leave an indelible mark on my life and the lives of my loved ones.

Over the course of our relationship, Sheree’s mistreatment toward me intensified and became increasingly severe. She repeatedly resorting to physical violence, making threats, hurling insults, and belittling me as a means of punishment and exerting power over me.

The mistreatment was concealed even from my friends and family, and Sheree tricked me into thinking that I was voluntarily and willingly taking part in the mistreatment.

He went on to say: “She boldly stated that my actions warranted punishment, and that the repercussions were fair, as I had let her down somehow.

Did Sheree and Richard Spencer have children?

Yes, as detailed above, the couple had three children.

In an interview on Good Morning Britain discussing the domestic abuse he experienced from his wife in March 2023, Richard expressed: “I wanted to conceal my face so I could continue to drop off the kids at school.

He later praised the resilience shown by his children throughout the ordeal.

What was Sheree Spencer’s job?

Sheree held a high-ranking position at the HM Prison and Probation Service during the time she was perpetrating abuse against her spouse.

Where is Sheree Spencer now?
