In the potential third installment of Tim Burton’s classic horror-comedy series, Beetlejuice 3, it’s possible that Adam and Barbara Maitland might reappear. Although they were noticeably missing from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, their absence could be explained by the fact that they discovered a hidden loophole in the afterlife rules, which enabled them to leave their home earlier than expected, as Lydia Deetz hinted in the 2024 sequel.
Adam and Barbara might have joined the other recurring figures in the film “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” set around 40 years after the initial movie, regardless of whether or not a certain loophole was present. Given that Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis remain active in showbiz, they could once again embody their deceased characters in the forthcoming “Beetlejuice 3,” a project under development. The sequel might delve into various explanations for how and why the Maitlands managed to depart from their home.
5. The Maitlands’ Loophole Was Helping Lydia To Grow Into Adulthood
Lydia Gave Adam And Barbara A New Purpose
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve pondered over the enchanting world of Beetlejuice, and one intriguing theory is that Adam and Barbara managed to defy the rule of being confined to their house because of the profound influence they exerted on Lydia Deetz. When Lydia shifted into the Maitlands’ abode with her parents in the initial movie, she was shrouded in solitude and melancholy. Yet, she found a connection with these spectral duo that was so strong, she expressed a preference for dying and joining Adam and Barbara over continuing to live with Charles and Delia.
In a different turn of events, Adam and Barbara managed to persuade Lydia that it was important for her to embrace life, helping her transition into the adult portrayed in ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’. Despite being bound to their home after death, these characters formed a bond with Lydia. This connection provided them with a fresh objective – to nurture and care for her instead of scaring away her family. In doing so, they found the sense of purpose they lacked and fulfilled their desire to give love and support to Lydia, who yearned for it deeply. The movie concludes with them effectively taking on the role of parents, providing her the care she needed.
As an ardent movie enthusiast, I might say it like this: After growing up, getting married, and starting a family post the initial film, Lydia found herself struggling to bond with her daughter, Astrid. However, by the climax of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, their relationship had blossomed more than ever. Yet, Lydia’s tale doesn’t seem to be completely concluded, as she continues to grapple with ghostly visions of Betelgeuse. With Charles and Delia now in the Great Beyond, Lydia might still require some more mature advice during this new phase of her life. This could provide a compelling reason for Adam and Barbara’s return in Beetlejuice 3, offering Lydia the guidance she needs as an adult.
4. The Maitlands Moved On When Lydia Moved Away
Adam And Barbara May Move Back To Winter River With Lydia And Astrid
It has been speculated that Lydia, not being aware of Jeremy Frazier’s tragic events at his house in 2001 as portrayed in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, may have vacated Winter River prior to that time, thereby severing her connection with the town’s happenings.
If Adam and Barbara decided to assist in raising Lydia with Charles and Delia in Winter River following the discovery of a loophole, they could have resided in that house for no more than 13 years from when they met Lydia in 1988. It’s also plausible that they were permitted to leave after Lydia departed from Winter River, moving on independently before the Fraziers’ downfall in 2001. Yet, it is conceivable that Lydia opted to return to Winter River with Astrid at the conclusion of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Given Astrid’s fondness for the town, this could have given Adam and Barbara a compelling reason to revisit their old house to catch up with her.
3. Otho’s Botched Exorcism Freed The Maitlands
Adam And Barbara Were Bound To Their House Before Otho Worked His Magic
In the movie ‘Beetlejuice’, Delia Deetz’s questionable interior designer, Otho, resorts to using the ‘Handbook for the Recently Deceased’ to conduct a séance in an effort to connect with Adam and Barbara’s ghostly presence. Unfortunately, he inadvertently performs an exorcism on the Maitlands’ spirits instead, resulting in their rapid aging and deterioration. This gruesome transformation made it appear as if they were dying yet again. While the effect on the two spectral beings isn’t explicitly stated, something significant seems to have transpired.
Even though Lydia ends the ritual by invoking Betelgeuse and agreeing to marry him, it’s plausible that the exorcism liberated them from the spiritual restrictions of their house, enabling them to depart it prematurely. This unsuccessful exorcism could be a central theme in Beetlejuice 3. Perhaps, Lydia seeks solutions to keep Betelgeuse’s spirit away from her life, and she may resort to unconventional methods. Re-visiting this exorcism in the third film would be significant, as it was the initial event that linked Lydia and Betelgeuse spiritually.
2. The Maitlands Never Technically Died In Their House
The Maitlands’ Loophole May Have Been Due To The Actual Site Of Their Deaths
Despite meeting their demise at the Winter River bridge in Beetlejuice, Adam and Barbara strangely found themselves back in their home. However, this scenario contradicts the fates of other characters within the Beetlejuice franchise. For instance, Charles Deetz from Beetlejuice: Beetlejuice died when his plane crashed into the ocean and was later eaten by a shark. Instead of being stuck haunting his and Delia’s city apartment for 125 years like other characters, he went straight to the afterlife’s waiting room with the upper half of his body still missing due to the shark attack. Similarly, when Delia was bitten by a poisonous snake, she too skipped the haunting phase and headed directly to the afterlife’s waiting room.
Given that Adam and Barbara didn’t pass away in their house in Beetlejuice, it would make sense that they wouldn’t have to continue living in their house, much like Charles. The question of whether Adam and Barbara deserved a special exemption to leave their home or if Charles was compelled to haunt his, might have been due to some oversight in the overcrowded and chaotic bureaucracy of the afterlife, an issue that could potentially be resolved in Beetlejuice 3.
1. Adam And Barbara Are Working Somewhere In The Afterlife
Adam And Barbara May Have Gotten New Jobs Like Richard
In the Beetlejuice films, it’s been unclear and inconsistent how hauntings work. For example, Richard, who died in a boating accident in Brazil before the events of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, was seen working at the Immigration Office in the afterlife. Yet, he claimed to occasionally visit Lydia and Astrid even though they hadn’t seen his spirit before, suggesting he might have more liberty than other spirits.
It’s unclear why Richard didn’t have to remain at home following his demise. Perhaps, because he died elsewhere, he landed a position as a spectral bureaucrat instead of being a poltergeist in the mortal world. Consequently, instead of proceeding to the afterlife, Adam and Barbara might have obtained similar positions as Richard, opening up an opportunity for them to appear in Beetlejuice 3, given that the movie is likely to revisit those chaotic halls once more.
