As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience in the industry, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformation of our beloved screen world. The environmental impact of film and TV production has long been a concern, but it’s heartening to see organizations like Albert taking proactive steps towards sustainability.
After wrapping up a Netflix documentary such as ‘My Octopus Teacher’ or a BBC series like ‘Sherwood’, you might have spotted a small ‘Albert Certified Production’ emblem tucked into the lower-left corner of your screen.
Typically, the logo appears following the end credits, accompanied by an imprint like a footstep. It often appears with the names of the production companies and distributors involved.
What, specifically, is the significance of being ‘Albert Certified’, and why would productions choose to participate in this program?

What is an Albert Certified Production?
According to its website, Albert is recognized as the foremost organization championing environmental sustainability within the film/TV (screen) industry.
Established in 2011, its primary objective is to assist the film and television sector in minimizing the environmental footprint of production, while also generating content that embodies a vision for a sustainable tomorrow. This information can be found in the ‘About’ section.
This goal is attained by the organization, spearheaded by BAFTA, using multiple approaches such as digital resources, educational programs, workshops, hands-on advice, and pioneering ideas in their field.
The goal here is to minimize the environmental footprint of all TV and cinema productions as much as feasible.
In order for a studio to earn the title of Albert Certified Production, they need to demonstrate that their projects are making proactive efforts to minimize their environmental impact. The certification level, ranging from one to three stars, is awarded based on the efficiency and extent of these sustainability measures.
Albert collaborates with a diverse range of clients, spanning renowned television organizations like the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4, as well as streaming platforms such as Netflix, and industry organizations like the British Film Institute (BFI).
In the year 2022, Albert was responsible for approving a total of 1,933 projects and educating a grand number of 3,600 professionals in the field about environmental conservation and mitigating climate change.
The organization has taken charge of initiatives like the Creative Offsets program, which helps studios reduce their unavoidable carbon emissions, and most recently, the Climate Action Blueprint, a plan aimed at speeding up climate action in four main sectors: on-screen activities, cultural development and skills, standards, monitoring, and reporting, and off-screen actions.
In May 2024, Albert collaborated with the iconic soap opera Emmerdale, which was marking its 10,000th episode, to facilitate their shift towards zero-emission production.
As the head of production for this intriguing series, I find myself compelled to share that it’s not just the drama and action unfolding on screen that we strive to portray authentically. Behind every scene lies an equally engaging story, and we feel a strong sense of duty to bring these aspects to light as well. It’s about delving deeper into the lives of our characters, exploring their daily struggles and triumphs, and ensuring that their stories resonate with you in a genuine way.
Regarding Albert’s crucial role in the film industry, Matt Scarff, head of BAFTA Albert, commented: “The desire for environmental transformation within this field is evident, and the approach we have at Albert is ideally suited to facilitate the necessary adjustments to preserve our planet’s future.
