In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, romance might not always take center stage, but it contributes significantly to the plot, often serving as a secondary element amidst thrilling hero-versus-villain battles. However, when romantic stories are given more importance, they can greatly enhance a film’s impact. The MCU introduced Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) as one of its primary couples in 2008’s Iron Man, and since then, numerous other relationships have been introduced. Notable romantic pairs in the MCU include Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and MJ (Zendaya), Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), and Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany). One MCU film, however, puts a romantic narrative at the forefront, using love to set its overall mood.
Without a doubt, the most romantic Marvel Cinematic Universe film is undeniably “Thor: Love and Thunder” (2022). In this installment, we find Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) reconnecting emotionally after years apart, which started following the incidents in 2011’s “Thor” and 2013’s “Thor: The Dark World.”
As Jane battles cancer, she takes up Mjolnir to become the Mighty Thor. Catching up on lost time with Thor, they embark on one final adventure together. Their journey ends with the defeat of Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale). Heartbreakingly, the strength needed to vanquish Gorr took a toll on Jane’s health, eventually leading to her demise. Despite Thor and Jane not ending up together at the end of “Thor: Love and Thunder,” it concludes the enchanting love story that has been a staple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Thor: Love and Thunder Is the MCU’s Most Romantic Movie
Regardless of the numerous issues found in the movie “Thor: Love and Thunder”, it’s undeniable that the rekindling of Thor and Jane’s romance stands out as its most compelling aspect. The chemistry between the two characters, first established in “Thor” and “Thor: The Dark World”, captured viewers’ hearts due to their contrasting lives yet deep bond. Throughout these previous films, they risked everything to save one another, even during their separation. In “Love and Thunder”, their reunion during Gorr’s assault on New Asgard reignites their passionate chemistry, leading them to work together in the film.
In the movie Love and Thunder, we get a heartwarming peek into Thor and Jane’s relationship, which was previously underscored in other films. Through a series of humorous and relatable vignettes from their past, we see their bond unfold – one that is filled with silliness and everyday moments. As the movie progresses, the initial awkwardness between them gives way to a deeper connection, marked by a tender kiss. This is when Jane reveals her cancer diagnosis, adding an emotional depth to their reunion. This heartfelt scene not only highlights Thor and Jane’s passionate history but also sets the stage for the high-stakes showdown against Gorr in the upcoming battle.
Apart from the romantic storyline involving Thor and Jane in “Thor: Love and Thunder”, the film also featured Korg (played by Taika Waititi) getting married to another Kronan towards the end. Unfortunately, Valkyrie was unable to find her queen to rule New Asgard with her, but this may be addressed elsewhere in the future. Throughout “Thor: Love and Thunder”, it is evident that romance plays a significant role in the storyline compared to other Marvel Cinematic Universe films.
Thor: Love and Thunder‘s Romance Plays a Unique Role in the Movie
The romantic aspects in “Thor: Love and Thunder” differ from other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, as Jane Foster plays a significant role in the storyline, unlike traditional superhero movies where love interests are often one-dimensional characters used primarily for emotional tension. In this film, Jane’s return is not exploited for a shallow purpose. Instead, Natalie Portman’s character becomes a powerful figure in her own right, with motivations to fight that extend beyond her relationship with Thor. This transformation of Jane’s character in “Love and Thunder” makes her bittersweet ending seem deserved, rather than just another arbitrary elimination of a scarcely used female character in the MCU.
You can now watch “Thor: Love and Thunder” on Disney+. On the other hand, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is returning to theaters with “Captain America: Brave New World,” which will premiere on Valentine’s Day, February 14th.
