What Matthew Perry's Friends Mom Morgan Fairchild Wishes She Told Him

As a die-hard fan of the legendary sitcom “Friends”, I must say that Matthew Perry’s portrayal of Chandler Bing was nothing short of extraordinary. The way he breathed life into this sarcastic, witty character who had a heart as golden as his Central Perk coffees will forever be etched in our minds.

No one told Morgan Fairchild life was gonna be this way.

Approximately a year following Matthew Perry’s passing at the age of 54, the actress who portrayed Chandler Bing’s mother on Friends, shared what she would have liked to tell him if given the chance.

Fairchild expressed his apologies and wished things could have been different, stating this during an exclusive interview with TopMob News. He shared that while he was working with him on set—and sometimes during his struggles—he made efforts to support him. However, it’s challenging when your presence is limited, as Fairchild was coming and going from the show. In the thick of their troubles, it becomes particularly difficult. Still, he emphasized his readiness to be there for him.

On October 28, 2023, Perry was discovered unconscious in a hot tub at his residence in Los Angeles and sadly pronounced dead on the spot. The Los Angeles County medical examiner concluded that Perry died as a result of the immediate impact of ketamine, with drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine (a medication used for treating opioid addiction) contributing to his death. The manner of Perry’s death, who openly discussed his struggle with addiction in his 2022 memoir, was officially classified as an accident.

Reflecting on the situation, I must admit that I, too, had assumed he would emerge triumphantly from his challenges. However, when things didn’t pan out as expected, I can’t help but feel it came as an unexpected jolt – not just for me, but for everyone.

In August, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California reported that five individuals were accused of involvement in the death of a person named Perry. According to their statement, Erik Fleming, who admitted to supplying the ketamine that led to Perry’s demise, confessed to charges of conspiring to distribute ketamine and distributing the drug that caused death. Furthermore, Dr. Mark Chavez and Perry’s assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, both pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute ketamine. The statement mentioned that Iwamasa confessed to repeatedly injecting Perry with ketamine without any formal medical training.

Simultaneously, Jasveen Sangha, often referred to as “The Ketamine Queen” in North Hollywood, and Dr. Salvador Plasencia have both denied the charges of conspiring to distribute ketamine, as reported by NBC News.

Apart from sharing a screen family with Perry in his TV shows, Fairchild is also acquainted with the actor’s actual family, such as his father John Bennett Perry, who was her co-star in the 80s dramas ‘Flamingo Road’ and ‘Falcon Crest’.

She mentioned that she had known his father in the past. Furthermore, she expressed deep sorrow about losing a child, particularly one who was remarkable, generous, and gifted, at a time when things appeared to be improving greatly, which made it all the more heartbreaking.

Indeed, even at 74 years old, she vividly recalls the moment Perry leaped towards her on their first work day and shared, “You may not recall me, but I often spent time on the sets of Flamingo Road and Falcon Crest with you, alongside my father.” Upon recognizing his father, she mused, “I can’t believe the little kid I used to play with is now a grown adult.

And quite a charming one at that.

Fairchild recalled him as being incredibly sweet, kind, and bubbly, with an ability to make any room feel brighter. He was also extremely humorous and generous to everyone he met. It’s heartbreaking to see his current state given how much progress he seemed to be making. The loss of such a gifted talent, a genuinely lovely individual who I knew as a bright, promising young actor, is truly saddening.

And she has many fond memories from their time on the Friends set.

During breaks, he was incredibly amusing and full of humor,” she reminisced. “And it’s vivid in my memory that he excelled at the art of the sudden, unexpected glance.

One unforgettable moment that lingers vividly in my mind is when I, as an ardent fan, had the privilege of witnessing Kathleen Turner’s character, Chandler’s other parent, gracefully participating in his wedding to the ever-lovable Monica Geller, portrayed by Courteney Cox.

In simpler terms, Fairchild mentioned the rehearsal, wedding, and all related events. He particularly recalled his hilarious antics even during breaks from filming. Furthermore, he appreciated the comedic twists that he added to the scenes, as he was an incredibly talented and natural comedian. The joyful, uplifting moments are what stand out in Fairchild’s memory.

Among all Chandler’s memorable scenes, choosing one is quite a challenge due to his abundant humor, but I might pick the flashback when he learns about losing a toe, complete with the iconic ’80s style reminiscent of Miami Vice and the Flock of Seagulls. Here, Monica is responsible for his missing toe. In response, she places a turkey on her head, accessorizes it with a hat and sunglasses, performs a dance, and accidentally says “I love you.” Although he tries to retract it, we all sense that the sentiment was genuine. With this heartfelt moment, their relationship progresses to a new level.—Natalie Finn (Paraphrased)

Jacqueline Uddo shares that it was Matthew Perry, whom she knew through their mutual community in the ’90s, who led her to discover the TV show Friends. Since then, it has remained her all-time favorite show. Among many unforgettable Chandler Bing moments, “The One Where Everybody Finds Out” stands out as particularly brilliant. In this episode, Phoebe discovers Monica and Chandler’s relationship secret and tests Chandler with flirtatious behavior. The writing and humor in the scene are exceptional.

Is it possible that this could be any more challenging? There are just so many side-splitting Chandler Bing one-liners that I continue to use all the time (“Is it too much to ask to know if I’m wearing a dress?”, “IKEA is where I go to get my ya-yas, you build them yourself but they cost a bit less.”, “I’m not very good at giving advice. Can I instead offer a sarcastic remark?”)

Ever since the series finale, I can’t shake off the fact that Chandler was the one to have the last line. Even though it was Rachel, left behind and yearning for her plane, who proposed they grab a cup of coffee. In his trademark witty style, Chandler quipped, “Where?” as if suggesting some far-off, exotic cafe, but I knew he meant their usual spot down the block.

The poignancy of that straightforward yet impactful instance was amplified by the knowledge that it was Perry who asked to be the one to have the final say, making him all the more reminiscent of Chandler. (Could he be any more like Chandler?)

Prior to the final episode, Perry had a private conversation with co-creator Marta Kauffman. He wrote in his 2022 memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing” that he said, “Nobody else will find this significant except me.” Therefore, he humbly requested, “Could I have the final line?” This is why at the end of the series as everyone exits the apartment and Rachel proposes one last coffee, Perry was given the opportunity to conclude “Friends”.

If that didn’t hit you right in the feels, Perry’s next observation is sure to do so.

Tierney Bricker expressed, “I adore Schwimmer’s expression when I say that line – it’s a delightful blend of fondness and mirth,” she added, “which is exactly what ‘Friends’ has consistently offered to its audience for years.

One of my favorite episodes is season five’s “The One Where Everyone Finds Out.”

In a clear choice that’s justified, this situation is hilariously amusing due to the group constantly playing tricks on each other, all revolving around a secret most of them share. However, amidst the intricate games of deceit, Chandler reveals his deep feelings for Monica, solidifying their position as the show’s principal romantic duo.
