Following the release of “What Remains of Edith Finch” in 2017, I’ve been eagerly waiting for Giant Sparrow’s next move. Now, they’ve unveiled it! Dubbed “Heron” on their website and still in its early stages, this upcoming game invites us to delve into the awe-inspiring and terrifying realms of biological wonders. As a player, I’ll be stepping into the shoes of a field biologist who navigates both the ordinary and extraordinary urban wildlife.
Drawing inspiration from games like Ico, Windosill, and the animated film Spirited Away, as well as the captivating nature documentaries by David Attenborough, this project presents a compilation of brief narratives, as revealed by creative director and founder Ian Dallas in an interview with The New York Times.
Introducing a touch of whimsical creatures sparked some captivating advancements in our project, as Dallas explained, “As we incorporated a few quirky aspects, it took us to some bizarre and intriguing directions.” Our main intention is to emphasize the oddities of biology itself. Consequently, the game has an unusual feel where the animals appear rather unappealing or unpleasant.
The tone of this game will be quite somber, reminiscent of “What Remains of Edith Finch.” We aim to explore some of nature’s processes, even those as seemingly beautiful as a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly, in a manner that might seem genuinely terrifying. In essence, we strive to create an unusual gaming experience that stands out from the norm.
