What Shannen Doherty Said About Motherhood Months Before Her Death

I have had the opportunity to closely examine Shannen Doherty‘s image gallery, and I am deeply moved by the richness of her experiences that are reflected in these photographs. Her face tells a story of resilience, determination, and grace in the face of adversity.

Shannen Doherty never gave up her dream of becoming a mother.

A few months before her passing on July 13 due to breast cancer, the former star of “Beverly Hills, 90210” shared deeper reflections on her experience as a mother and how it influenced her cancer treatment decisions.

She expressed during the January 2024 episode of “Let’s Be Clear” podcast that she not only desired a child for herself, but also for her former husband, Kurt Iswarienko. The reason being, she wanted it to enrich their marriage and complete his personal journey towards becoming a father.

In the show, Shannen talked about her choice not to use tamoxifen, a common hormonal treatment given after breast cancer remission, during her episode that included her long-term doctor, Dr. Lawrence Piro.

Shannen expressed her confidence that her cancer wouldn’t return, adding, “I attributed my diagnosis to undergoing IVF treatments.”

I met Kurt back in 2011 and we got married, but looking back, our paths had taken different turns by April 2023. Life is full of surprises, isn’t it? When the time came for us to make a big decision, we turned to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to help start a family. And believe me, I underwent numerous IVF rounds as part of that journey.

During the podcast, Dr. Piro pointed out that one reason Shannen declined tamoxifen and other treatments after reaching remission was her desire to have a child. Chemotherapy may lead to early menopause.

He also noted the ways cancer forced the Charmed star to reflect on what was important to her.

He shared with Shannen that facing cancer and its treatment caused him to reflect deeply on his own life experiences. This introspection also ignited a strong desire within him to have a child, providing an opportunity to pass on the valuable lessons and emotions he’s gained throughout life to help raise a new generation.

In the end, Shannen’s breast cancer came back in 2019. She announced in 2020 that it had advanced to stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. By November 2023, the cancer had spread to her brain and bones.

But even then, Shannen was determined to live life to the fullest.

She expressed to People magazine, “I’m not finished with life yet. I’m not done with expressing love. I’m not through with making something new. I’m not completed my mission of striving for improvement. Simply put, I’m not finished.”
