As a movie reviewer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Joker: Folie à Deux has certainly piqued my interest. The combination of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, two powerhouses in their respective fields, is already an intriguing prospect. Add to that the rumors of a musical element, and I’m all but sold!
The eagerly awaited sequel to the 2019 Academy Award-winning DC movie, titled “Joker: Madness Collaboration,” will hit theaters next week.
Prior to the release of the sequel, there’s a major curiosity among fans: will Joker 2 be a musical production?
In the past few months, there’s been quite a lot of talk about whether Joker 2 could potentially be a musical – this has mainly stemmed from Lady Gaga being cast as Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn, along with the latest trailer that hinted at Fleck and Quinn joining forces for an unexpected musical act.
Although music plays a significant role in the upcoming film, director Todd Phillips has expressed reservations about labeling it as a musical. Earlier, he told Variety that most of the music in the movie is actually just dialogue. Essentially, Arthur doesn’t have the words to express what he wants, so he sings those feelings instead.
He continued: “I just don’t want people to think that it’s like In the Heights, where the lady in the bodega starts to sing and they take it out onto the street, and the police are dancing. No disrespect, because I loved In the Heights.”
While addressing attendees at CinemaCon, he also commented (through Entertainment Weekly): “We didn’t discuss it in those terms, but I prefer to say it’s a movie where music plays a crucial role. To me, this doesn’t stray too far from the original film.
Although Arthur seems peculiar and distant, he carries a melodious soul within him. There’s an elegance about him, which significantly influenced the choreography in the initial movie. In this sequel, his dance moves don’t feel like a major departure. Instead, they are different, but I believe their significance will become clear when you watch it.
As a seasoned film critic, let me share my thoughts on the captivating selection of Lady Gaga for her role in “A Star Is Born”. Being privy to her magical talent during my tenure as a producer, I can attest that this was not merely a random casting choice. My initial encounter with her, when I had the opportunity to observe her at work on set, left an indelible impression that she was the perfect fit for the part.
“As we were writing this script, Scott [Silver], who I wrote it with, kept going back to her.”
Don’t mistake the soundtrack for “The Joker 2” with Lady Gaga’s album titled “Harlequin,” which comprises 13 songs that she’s releasing concurrently with her latest movie.
So, do we know which songs are set to feature in Joker 2? Read on for everything we know so far.
What songs feature in the Joker 2 soundtrack?
The artists set to be featured on the soundtrack are yet to be announced.
According to Variety’s report from March, the upcoming film is expected to feature at least fifteen song covers, including “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical The Band Wagon, which is well-known for its association with Judy Garland.
Additionally, it was mentioned back then that there might be a chance for an original tune or two to make it into the final cut.
In the trailer, we’re not provided with much information about the music scenes since neither Phoenix nor Gaga are seen performing any songs.
Yet, the video features the tune “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” a track originally sung by Jackie DeShannon back in 1965, as its background music.
Could it be that the film may feature additional tunes from the ’60s? It’s a possibility, but we’ll need to wait for further updates to know for sure.
