As a devoted fan who has followed the saga of Star Wars since its inception, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of empathy for the unshakable grief that Mark Hamill carries, eight years after losing his cherished friend and co-star, Carrie Fisher. Their bond, forged on the silver screen, transcended the boundaries of their roles as Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. The laughter they shared, the fights they had, and the deep, unspoken understanding between them, all serve as a poignant testament to their extraordinary friendship.

Over seven years since the actress passed away in 2016, her Star Wars co-star and lifelong companion confessed that the burden of her passing remains significant.

Just as any strong bond can have its disagreements, he acknowledged that they didn’t always agree on everything. “We were not just siblings by blood, but also in spirit, where we would argue,” he explained. “Yet, those arguments would be long forgotten within a few days. She was extraordinary, and her passing is something I am still grappling with.

Hamill and Fisher initially crossed paths when they were selected to portray Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia in the original Star Wars movie, which premiered in 1977 and led to a massive media empire. Despite their on-screen encounters continuing in the subsequent two films of the original trilogy, their relationship faded over time until they lost touch. However, they rekindled their bond both off-camera and on, reuniting in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), the latter being released posthumously for Fisher following her death on December 27, 2016.

Apart from Hamill, Fisher’s legacy is also being carried forward by none other than Billie Lourd. She has ensured to pay tribute to the actress through her two children – son Kingston, 3, and daughter Jackson, 20 months – whom she shares with her husband, Austen Rydell.

Today, I found myself cradling my daughter as she slept peacefully in my arms, and tears of happiness filled my eyes.
