What the Venom 3 Box Office Means for the Future of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

As a longtime comic book enthusiast and moviegoer, I must say that the recent developments in the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU) have been quite intriguing, to put it mildly. Having witnessed the rise and fall of various superhero franchises over the years, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu when considering the SSU’s journey.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, it seems that Sony might have overreached with their live-action Spider-Verse. The success of Venom, raking in an impressive $856 million worldwide, set the stage for what became known as Sony’s Marvel Universe of Characters. However, even before the first Venom hit theaters, Sony had ambitious plans to tap into their 900-character agreement with Disney-owned Marvel.

“Venom: The Last Dance,” the closing chapter of a trilogy, garnered $51 million at the box office this weekend, surpassing the disappointing $37.6 million debut of “Joker 2” but falling short of the $67 million earned by “Black Adam” in the same period last year. The film’s Rotten Tomatoes score (39%) and worldwide earnings ($390 million) resemble those of “DC’s Movie,” while its opening weekend gross was lower than both previous Venom installments.

The Shared Spider-Man Universe (SSU) has been intertwined with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since the films “Venom 2” and “Morbius” weakly tried to connect the two realms via the multiverse. However, after “Kraven,” no further official announcements have been made, which suggests that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe might be winding down for its final performance.

In addition to Chiwetel Ejiofor from “Doctor Strange”, Juno Temple known for her role in “Ted Lasso”, Rhys Ifans famous for “The Amazing Spider-Man”, Alanna Ubach who appears in “Euphoria”, Peggy Lu reprising her character as Mrs. Chen, and Stephen Graham returning as Detective Mulligan from “Venom 2”, the movie “Venom: The Last Dance” is currently showing in cinemas.
