What Will Bullseye’s Fate Be in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2?

The Netflix series “Daredevil: Born Again” immediately brings back the menacing figure of Benjamin Poindexter, or Bullseye (Wilson Bethel), as a significant adversary. The narrative begins with an apparently ordinary evening at Josie’s bar, where Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) are unwinding. However, the peace is shattered when Bullseye unleashes a cold-blooded assault on the bar. He mercilessly shoots Foggy on the sidewalk and slaughters several patrons within Josie’s. When Daredevil arrives to confront him, they have an intense rooftop fight that ends with Matt, enraged by hearing Foggy’s last heartbeat, pushing Bullseye off the building. Despite Matt thinking he may have killed Bullseye, the season opener hints at his survival, establishing his presence throughout the series. However, Bullseye does not reappear in “Daredevil: Born Again” until its later episodes, paving the way for his role in Season 2.

WARNING: Spoilers below for Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, Episode 10

After the surprising turn of events at the premiere, Bullseye spends most of the season in prison serving his sentence, keeping a low profile. In Episode 8, we find ourselves back at Rikers Island where Poindexter is being held under protective custody because of his numerous enemies accumulated during his criminal life. The episode opens with guards carefully leading Poindexter through the facility, taking extra care with his restraints due to his talent for turning everyday objects into weapons. It later becomes apparent that this transfer to a general population is a death sentence for someone with such a high number of incarcerated criminals under their belt. This transfer has been strategically planned by Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) to eliminate a potentially dangerous loose end from his past.

Following Matt’s decision not to aid Pointdexter and abandoning him to perish in prison, Bullseye seizes an opportunity during a visit to the infirmary to effect his escape. In one of the season’s most gruesome scenes, Bullseye removes one of his own teeth and hurls it with lethal precision into the doctor’s eye. He then cold-bloodedly kills both the doctor and his escort guard, meticulously transforming medical tools into deadly weapons using his unmatched accuracy. After assuming the dead guard’s uniform, Pointdexter pilfers his ID card and boards a corrections bus, casually passing through security checkpoints. By the time the alarms are triggered, he has already vanished from Rikers Island.

In Episode 8, after gaining freedom, Bullseye swiftly carries out his plan for vengeance against Fisk. At a Black and White Gala fundraiser for the mayor’s Red Hook port project, we witness Poindexter readying himself for an assassination. He silently dispatches a security officer on the balcony of the venue and sets up with a sniper rifle, biding his time for the opportune moment to eliminate Fisk. The scene alternates between Fisk dancing with Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer) and Bullseye lining up his shot, creating a palpable anticipation for their impending showdown. When Poindexter eventually fires, Matt Murdock, sensing the danger, reflexively shoves Fisk out of harm’s way and takes the bullet instead. This botched assassination attempt sets off pandemonium at the gala as security personnel scramble to protect Fisk and hunt down the shooter, while Bullseye slips away unnoticed in the ensuing confusion.

The fallout from Bullseye’s assassination attempt proves to be the most impactful outcome of his actions throughout the season. Taking advantage of the situation, Fisk declares martial law over New York City, using the incident as a pretext. In Episode 9, he unveils his “Safer Streets” initiative, which outlaws all vigilantism, imposes a citywide curfew, and expands the powers of his Anti-Vigilante Task Force, allowing them to operate without supervision. This, in essence, was what Bullseye’s personal vendetta unwittingly provided Fisk to fulfill his authoritarian aspirations. As the season ends, Poindexter remains untraceable, making him one of New York’s most wanted fugitives, given his skills as an assassin and high priority status for Fisk’s enforcers. In his last scene, Bullseye is seen hiding in what appears to be a deserted apartment, while Fisk’s troops take control of New York City.

What’s Next for Bullseye in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2?

As “Daredevil: Born Again” approaches its second season, Bullseye finds himself in a challenging predicament amidst Mayor Fisk’s growing anti-vigilante campaign and Daredevil’s rising countermovement. With the Anti-Vigilante Task Force wielding extraordinary power and focusing on apprehending masked individuals, Bullseye becomes the focus of a citywide manhunt. This delicate situation opens up intriguing opportunities for his character in the forthcoming season.

Images from the set of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 suggest that Daredevil and Bullseye may form an alliance, sparking fan speculation. In contrast to Matt’s rejection of Poindexter’s manipulative pleas for help in Season 1, the tightening grip of Fisk on the city could force an unlikely partnership. The Season 1 finale depicts Matt starting a rebellion against Fisk’s rule, rallying allies at Josie’s Bar. Given Bullseye’s vendetta against Fisk and his exceptional talents, he might reluctantly aid this resistance.

Despite the difficulty in visualizing Matt working with the man who killed his friend’s best friend, such an alliance might be the less harmful option, considering that letting Bullseye loose in New York City could bring about disastrous results. Whether Bullseye reappears as a persistent adversary or transforms into a more nuanced ally against a bigger menace, his unresolved narrative is one of the most intriguing storylines driving into Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again.
