As a cinephile with decades of comic book movie-watching under my belt, I must say that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is currently a chaotic tapestry woven from threads that are yet to be fully connected. With Venom, Morbius, Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter, and an animated Spider-Verse in play, it feels like a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces and no clear picture of what the finished image should look like.
As a passionate movie buff, I’ve been pondering about Sony’s Spider-Man Universe lately. With Venom: The Last Dance now gracing our screens, the Venom trilogy has drawn to a close, yet Sony’s Marvel cinematic landscape is far from stagnant. Characters like Morbius, portrayed by Jared Leto, and Madame Web, played by Dakota Johnson, are stepping into the limelight. We also have Kraven the Hunter, embodied by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, joining the fray. Not to mention, an entire animated Spider-Verse featuring variant characters, headed by Miles Morales, portrayed by Shamiek Moore. It’s an exciting time for fans of the web-slinger!
The central problem lies in the lack of continuity between standalone Spider-Man offshoots produced by Sony, despite their marketing of “Sony’s Spider-Man Universe” as a connected universe like Marvel Studios’. For instance, the ‘Venom’ films never made any reference to Spider-Man, and Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock was brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe without any significant follow-up. Similarly, ‘Morbius’ left audiences perplexed with Easter eggs hinting at a video game version of Spider-Man and a post-credits scene that inexplicably introduced Michael Keaton’s Vulture from the MCU into the SSU. The connection between Madame Web and this universe is currently unclear, as her film is set years before ‘Venom’ or ‘Morbius’. Furthermore, the animated ‘Spider-Verse’ films are aware of alternate realities featuring Spider-Man, but have yet to acknowledge any of the SSU spinoffs.
To put it simply, the Sony Universe of Marvel characters is quite disorganized and fragmented, with few signs of an imminent crossover event. The latest film, “Venom: The Last Dance,” has added to this confusion by introducing Knull, a symbiote god who seems destined to be the main villain for the franchise. However, it’s unclear how this version of the “King In Black” crossover event will play out, and there are doubts about whether Knull can effectively bring together characters like Morbius, Madame Web, Miles Morales, or Kraven the Hunter, as there doesn’t appear to be a strong connection between them and Knull at this point.
Fans of Marvel Comics are starting to wonder if “King in Black” might extend beyond the comics, possibly merging with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), following the collapse or potential reboot of the Marvel Multiverse in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. Currently, Sony could benefit from acknowledging that they require assistance from Marvel Studios to develop a larger universe plan for their franchise – hinting that the Spider-Man brand might not be sufficient on its own to sustain a blockbuster universe, if it ever did.
Venom: The Last Dance is in theaters.
