What’s Going on With Sony’s Spider-Man Universe?

As a lifelong comic book enthusiast and moviegoer, I must say that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe leaves me feeling like a kid in a candy store with too many choices but no map to navigate through it all. While the concept of an interconnected universe similar to Marvel Studios is enticing, the execution so far has been more chaotic than a roomful of villains unleashed by Doctor Octopus.

It’s a valid question to wonder about the current state of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. With the release of “Venom: The Last Dance” in cinemas, the Venom trilogy has come to an end. Meanwhile, Sony’s Marvel movies have grown to include characters like Morbius (played by Jared Leto), Madame Web (portrayed by Dakota Johnson), Kraven the Hunter (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), and a whole animated universe of Spider-Man variants, with Miles Morales (Shamiek Moore) leading the pack.

The primary problem lies in the fact that there’s been minimal connection established between the standalone Spider-Man projects by Sony, despite their frequent use of the term “Sony’s Spider-Man Universe” which is similar to the interconnected universe created by Marvel Studios. For instance, the Venom movies failed to mention Spider-Man at all, and introduced Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock into the Marvel Cinematic Universe without any resolution. Similarly, Morbius left viewers puzzled with references to a video game Spider-Man and a post-credits scene that inexplicably brought Michael Keaton’s Vulture from the MCU into the SSU. The relationship between Madame Web and this universe is uncertain (as her film is set years before Venom or Morbius); the same can be said for the Spider-Verse animated films, which seem to acknowledge other realities with Spider-Man but have yet to acknowledge any of the SSU spinoffs.

To put it simply: The Sony Universe of Marvel Characters (SSU) is chaotic and fragmented, with no clear signs of a unified crossover event on the horizon. The latest Venom film, Venom: The Last Dance, has added to this confusion by introducing Knull, the symbiote god, as the franchise’s main antagonist. However, it remains uncertain how the “King in Black” crossover event featuring Knull and Earth’s battle against him will unfold, especially since there seems to be no strong connection between Knull and characters like Morbius, Madame Web, or Miles Morales, and no clear indication that Kraven the Hunter will serve as a unifying force.

What’s Going on With Sony’s Spider-Man Universe?

As a devoted Marvel fan myself, I’ve been pondering over rumors swirling about “King in Black” potentially spilling into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Given the tumultuous aftermath of Avengers: Doomsday and the impending Avengers: Secret Wars, it seems plausible that this could be a turning point in our beloved universe.

Venom: The Last Dance is in theaters.
