What’s next for Robert Eggers after Nosferatu?

After the massive success of his film ‘Nosferatu’, earning $173m and receiving critical acclaim, including an Oscar nomination for its cinematography, director Robert Eggers has revealed that his next project will continue to delve into the realm of monsters. At a recent Q&A, he mentioned co-writing a 13th-century horror titled ‘Werwulf’, which is how he spells it!

Collaborating with Sjon, the narrative unfolds in 13th-century England, boasting dialogues that are said to mirror the era’s authentic speech (much like The Canterbury Tales, readers familiar with it will recognize the style and feel for the actors who must learn it!). This work will also include translations and annotations since it employs Old English in its dialogue. As Eggers stated, “It’s a medieval werewolf film, and this is undoubtedly my darkest writing to date.

If you’ve watched all his movies up until now, you’re well aware that he isn’t afraid to tackle some dark and intense themes. For instance, The Witch features satanic imagery, The Lighthouse delves into madness, The Northman involves the violent storming of a village and the devastating burning down of a house filled with children, and not forgetting Bill Skarsgard’s remarkable transformation into Count Orlok in the leading role, as well as rumors of around two thousand rats being part of it.

It’s uncertain at this point what “Werwulf” might entail, but it seems likely to be mature content given the nature of its creator’s past work. However, one thing we can confirm is that it will undoubtedly share the same visually striking qualities found in all his previous films.

So that’s what’s next for Robert Eggers after Nosferatu?
