What’s Next for Star Wars After the Skeleton Crew Finale

The spacefaring journey of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” penned by Jon Watts (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”) and Christopher Ford (“Chaos Walking”), is a thrilling ride. This tale follows mysterious Force user Jod Na Nawood (portrayed by Jude Law), who guides misplaced youngsters, Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), KB (Kyriana Kratter), and Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) on an adventure to find their home and a rumored pirate’s treasure. The first season of this eight-episode series concludes on Disney+ on Tuesday, leaving fans wondering: Will there be a second season of “Skeleton Crew”?

To quote Yoda: “Difficult to see. Always in motion is the future.”

In a surprising turn of events, the dual-episode debut of the live-action Star Wars series in December didn’t make it into the Nielsen Top 10, marking a first for this particular franchise. However, the show, Skeleton Crew, garnered an impressive 95% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the second-best critically acclaimed live-action Star Wars series after Andor. To put things in perspective, The Acolyte’s June series premiere managed to secure a place on Nielsen with 488 million minutes viewed across its two-episode debut, but unfortunately, this series was canceled in August 2024.

Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, shared with Vulture on December 19th that the performance of ‘Acolyte’ didn’t meet expectations considering its high production cost estimated at $230 million. In contrast, Disney+ has observed growth in ‘Skeleton Crew’, and the reviews have been favorable. As a result, we will need to wait and see how things develop for both projects.

In 2026, Lucasfilm is all set to bring “The Mandalorian & Grogu” movie back to the big screen, marking their first feature film since “The Rise of Skywalker” concluded the epic Skywalker Saga in 2019. Simultaneously, the studio will keep growing the Star Wars universe on Disney+. The second and final season of “Andor”, a prequel to “Rogue One”, is set for release in April. Meanwhile, Dave Filoni, Lucasfilm’s Chief Creative Officer, is busy writing the script for “Ahsoka” season 2, and he’s also working on a new film centered around the New Republic that takes place after the events of “Return of the Jedi”, within the timeline of “The Mandalorian”.

The upcoming movie by Dave Filoni, scheduled to conclude the interwoven narratives featured in “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Ahsoka,” and “Skeleton Crew,” was unveiled as one of three fresh Star Wars films during Star Wars Celebration in 2023. James Mangold, known for his work on “Logan” and the upcoming “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” is directing a movie that takes place at the start of the Jedi era, while Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who has worked on “Ms. Marvel” and “Saving Face,” is overseeing a film that unfolds post-Star Wars sequel trilogy events and follows Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley) as she establishes a new Jedi Order.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve got to say that so far, only the movie “The Mandalorian” has a confirmed release date: May 22, 2026. The fourth season of the iconic “Star Wars” series, featuring helmeted bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and the adorable Force-trained Mandalorian Grogu, is currently in production at Disney+. However, Lucasfilm has kept quiet about anything beyond the second seasons of “Andor” and “Ahsoka,” leaving us eagerly waiting for more updates.

We’ve got the second season of ‘Andor’, and we can’t wait for it! It’s outstanding, I’ve seen every episode, and it’s an amazing season. Also, Dave Filoni is helming ‘Ahsoka’ season two. Furthermore, we’re considering several other series in development. We’ll make a decision about those soon.” (Bergman spoke to Vulture.)

He stated, “They need to excel, and once we believe we’ve achieved our goals, we’ll push ahead. Speaking about the movies, currently we have ‘The Mandalorian’ set for release on Memorial Day in ’26, along with several other projects we are working on. When it’s appropriate, we’ll reveal what those projects are.

Bergman continued by mentioning that Disney aims to make their streaming content as cost-effective as they can, yet emphasized that the ultimate objective, regardless of the project, is always to maintain a high level of quality.

He emphasized that quality is our top priority, and we won’t proceed with anything unless we believe it meets our standards. Therefore, expect a blend of series, some featuring extensive visual effects, which will naturally be costlier. On the other hand, there will also be productions that are less expensive due to fewer visual effects. However, both types of series will share one common characteristic: compelling narratives.

The Star Wars: Skeleton Crew finale premieres Jan. 14 on Disney+.
