Wheel of Time Showrunner Hopes Series Continues Elsewhere After Cancellation

Many viewers find it hard to accept that The Wheel of Time has been cancelled after its impressive three-season run, as they struggle to understand the series cancellation.

Given the unfortunate announcement that the show has ended, many fans have voiced their desire to revive it on another platform. A current petition is gathering momentum, advocating for the series’ continuation and emphasizing that season 3 was its most compelling episode so far.

Rafe Judkins, the showrunner, has recently shared his thoughts on the decision, posting a detailed message on Instagram. In essence, he stated that he’s been asked frequently in the past week about the cancellation of The Wheel of Time, and unfortunately, he doesn’t have a straightforward or simple answer. He regrets not being able to provide a clear explanation as to why it’s ending, but alas, he cannot.

Let me express that the team of actors and crew on our program is, without a doubt, the most gifted and delightful bunch I’ve collaborated with in my career.

Additionally, it’s truly fortunate that our creation has resonated not just with fans but also with critics, and remarkably, it has reached a global audience. For almost twenty weeks, it graced the Nielsen Top 10 list, an accomplishment that only a select few shows have managed in the past decade.

Judkins explains: “One key aim in developing this series, right from its conception, was to tell the entire tale. This is because the Wheel of Time books excel at something television has traditionally done well – improving as they progress. As our cast and crew joined us, they too recognized the potential if we could complete this amazing story.

We’ve given up a lot personally and creatively throughout this journey, and falling just short at the end feels like a crushing disappointment to everyone involved.

A significant amount of discussion revolves around the shift in television, moving towards fewer seasons and shorter episodes, aimed at gaining more streaming subscribers swiftly. However, I strongly feel that this trend contradicts the core power of television – the ability to tell captivating, prolonged stories.

This creative expression, similar to the realm of epic fantasies, offers a destination where individuals can immerse themselves in beloved characters, not just for a fleeting moment, but for multiple years on end. I’m convinced that many decision-makers in the industry, be they executives, studios, or networks, understand this.

I am confident that we’ll navigate the challenges of this phase in our industry, ultimately returning to our core strength: creating engaging characters who become a regular part of people’s homes and daily routines each week.

He determined: “Could The Wheel of Time possibly continue its story on another network and reach a conclusion? Regrettably, such occurrences are not common, but they do take place. Intriguingly, one reason we initially chose Amazon as our home was due to their decision to pick up The Expanse after SYFY had cancelled it.

Maybe The Wheel of Time TV series will, like the books, challenge conventional notions of ‘starts’ and ‘finishes’ from the get-go. Here’s hoping it does, as both the series and its followers deserve a satisfying conclusion to their epic tale.

It appears that showrunner Judkins shares the enthusiasm of the fans, as he too seems open to the idea of continuing his work on The Wheel of Time series, although he’s uncertain about the specifics of how this might occur at the moment.

In much the same vein, Brandon Sanderson – the renowned author best recognized for completing The Wheel of Time series – expressed his views regarding the cancellation news in a comment posted to one of his YouTube video discussions.

He expressed that he found it unfortunate because, although he had issues with the series, its dedicated audience deserved more than a cancellation following its peak season. He also mentioned that he won’t miss being largely disregarded; they only wanted his name associated for credibility, but not to engage him in any significant role.

At present, supporters can only hope that something can be arranged to alter the show’s trajectory despite its cancellation, keeping their fingers crossed in the meantime.
