As a longtime fan of the Marvel universe, I must say that the upcoming movie, Thunderbolts, has certainly piqued my interest. The cast changes and character developments are reminiscent of the ever-evolving comic books we all know and love.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has experienced a significant boost lately, primarily due to the incredible box office performance of Deadpool and Wolverine. This trend is promising news for the future of the franchise, as it follows a few underwhelming releases in a row.
As a lifelong Marvel fan who grew up watching these characters come to life on the big screen, I must say that my excitement for the upcoming Thunderbolts movie is palpable. Having followed the evolution of Bucky Barnes and Yelena Belova from sidekicks to anti-heroes in their own right, it’s thrilling to see them team up in a film centered around a group of complex characters with questionable moral compasses.
Additionally intriguing for enthusiasts, a mysterious asterisk was appended to the film’s title in early 2024, leaving fans wondering about its significance. Marvel chief Kevin Feige hinted that the explanation for this enigmatic symbol would be revealed “only after the movie is released” in May.
“Kevin Feige has chosen to remain tight-lipped about ‘Thunderbolts’ until its release on May 5, 2025.”

Lately, during San Diego Comic Con, a short preview was screened for spectators. Although this trailer isn’t accessible online for fans yet, here’s what we’ve gathered: It featured snippets of action sequences and the line “Be mindful when you gather.”
As I pen down my thoughts, an intriguing tidbit has surfaced: The ensemble of this movie is slated to reappear in the upcoming Avengers installments titled “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars.” This implies that these characters are poised to take center stage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future, making them significant figures to watch out for.
As a longtime comic book fan, I’ve always been intrigued by the unique and complex characters that populate the Marvel Universe. So when I heard about the upcoming movie “Thunderbolts,” I was eager to learn more. The cast for this film is shaping up to be quite impressive, with several familiar faces from the MCU set to star. From what I’ve gathered, it looks like fans can expect an action-packed, high-stakes adventure that delves deep into the lives of these flawed and misunderstood heroes. The Thunderbolts have always been a dynamic team in the comics, and I’m excited to see how they will be brought to life on the big screen. Can’t wait to see how it all unfolds!
While you’re waiting, if you’re interested in watching every Marvel Cinematic Universe film thus far, we’ve got you sorted with our handy guide on the Marvel movies in sequential order.
Marvel’s Thunderbolts release date
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the highly anticipated film “Thunderbolts” will grace our cinema screens on a rather soon Friday, May 2nd, 2025! The release date has been gently nudged forward from its initial slot of July 25th, 2025. Can’t wait to immerse myself in the action!
The movie is showing promising progress given its past issues with production stoppages due to the 2023 strikes.
Earlier adjustments in filming caused a change in personnel for the project, resulting in the departures of Ayo Edebiri from The Bear and Steven Yeun from The Walking Dead, both due to conflicts with their schedules.
Initially, the movie was set to be released in 2024, as confirmed in July 2022. However, its release was delayed due to the series of strikes that occurred within the film industry in 2023.
It was then moved up in February 2024 when it swapped dates with Fantastic Four.
Marvel’s Thunderbolts cast
The following cast members will appear in Marvel’s Thunderbolts.
- Florence Pugh as Black Widow/Yelena Belova
- Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier/James Buchanan ‘Bucky’ Barnes
- David Harbour as Red Guardian/Alexei Shostakov
- Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster/Antonia Dreykov
- Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost/Ava Starr
- Wyatt Russell as US Agent/John Walker
- Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina ‘Val’ Allegra de Fontaine
- Harrison Ford as Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross
- Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel
- Lewis Pullman as Bon/Sentry
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a group of characters from various parts will reappear in the upcoming movie called Thunderbolts.
In my excitement, I’d like to share that I’m thrilled to see Florence Pugh once again step into the shoes of Yelena Belova, following her captivating performances in Black Widow and Hawkeye. Meanwhile, it’s a delight to have John Krasinski return to our screens after his memorable stints in the Captain America trilogy, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
In other parts, we see the return of David Harbour (Black Widow) and Olga Kurylenko, while Hannah John-Kamen reappears as the antagonist Ghost from Ant-Man and The Wasp.
In brief, John Walker (Wyatt Russell) reappears following “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” where he was enlisted by the secretive character Val, portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Similarly, Val recruited Belova in the closing scene of “Black Widow.”
In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Val was revealed to be the new director of the CIA.
After the demise of actor William Hurt, it’s been announced that Harrison Ford, renowned for his roles in Star Wars and Indiana Jones, will take on the character of Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross.
Ford’s first appearance as the character will occur in Captain America: New World Order.
Although it’s yet unconfirmed if Daniel Brühl will make an appearance, his character, Baron Helmut Zemo, is linked to the Thunderbolts due to their shared history.
He added: “The only thing I can say – everybody knows – is I’m not dead!”
Maybe he could return after all…
Ayo Edebiri (from “The Bear”) initially became part of the Thunderbolts’ cast without specifying her role. However, it was revealed in January that she had left the production due to scheduling conflicts. In her stead, Geraldine Viswanathan, known for her roles in Miracle Workers and Blockers, is now expected to join the project.
As a movie enthusiast, I must share some disappointing news. Edebiri isn’t the sole talent departing from this upcoming production. The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun was initially slated to play a pivotal role in the film, but unfortunately, he had to step down due to scheduling issues caused by the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Lewis Pullman, known for his stellar performance in Top Gun: Maverick, is now set to take over Yeun’s role.
In a conversation with Variety, Yeun shared the reasons behind his exit, stating, “Over time and changes, I found myself being drawn away… However, I’m confident that Jake [Schreier] will excel in his role.”
Additionally, there are rumors suggesting that Rachel Weisz and Laurence Fishburne might reprise their roles as Melina Vostokoff and Bill Foster. But at this point, these reports are unconfirmed.
Is there a trailer for Marvel’s Thunderbolts?
Currently, a public trailer for Thunderbolts hasn’t been released yet – however, some fortunate fans got a sneak peek during the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024.
We will be sure to update you as soon as a trailer is officially released.
What is the plot for Marvel’s Thunderbolts?
As a long-time Marvel fan with a keen interest in antihero characters, I am genuinely excited about the upcoming series, Marvel’s Thunderbolts. Having spent countless hours immersed in the intricate world of comic books and movies, it is fascinating to see how Marvel continues to innovate and push boundaries in their storytelling. The concept of a group of antiheroes carrying out government missions aligns perfectly with my personal preference for morally ambiguous characters that straddle the line between good and evil. I eagerly await the release of Thunderbolts, hoping it delivers an engaging narrative filled with complex characters, high-stakes action, and thought-provoking moral dilemmas.
In the Marvel Universe, the Thunderbolts initially appeared to be a group of villains masquerading as heroes when the Avengers weren’t present. However, beneath their heroic facade, they were actually the evil Master’s of Evil, commanded by Baron Helmut Zemo.
As a seasoned intelligence analyst with years of experience under my belt, I have seen many teams come and go, but this one stands out. The organization seems to be spearheaded by none other than Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, a name that has been making waves in the world of espionage. Her track record speaks for itself, and it’s clear she’s assembled a team worthy of her reputation.
Given his role as a politician, it’s plausible that Thaddeus Ross might be allied with Val. Their radical stance on various issues within the Marvel Cinematic Universe suggests a potential partnership.
