Stanley Kubrick’s movie “The Shining,” based on Stephen King’s novel, is his most famous and financially successful work. In this chilling tale, Jack Nicholson portrayed a pivotal role as a father and aspiring author who, with his family, spent the winter in a secluded hotel. Here, an ominous force subtly pushed him towards acts of violence. Simultaneously, his son, gifted with psychic abilities, foresaw terrifying glimpses of the hotel’s haunting past and future events.
One popular tale from the production of the movie is about Stephen King’s experience. Initially thrilled that a director as esteemed as Stanley Kubrick was adapting one of his books, King eventually grew displeased when he noticed how significantly his book had been changed. It’s said that their relationship deteriorated even further after King visited the set of The Shining.
Over a long period, Kubrick was assisted by Leon Vitali, who passed away later. Initially an actor in ‘Barry Lyndon,’ he dedicated his time to Kubrick’s work starting with ‘The Shining.’ During the production process, he auditioned numerous children for Danny’s role and prepared a shortlist for the director. We were fortunate enough to have a lengthy conversation with Leon, discussing the creation of ‘The Shining.’ Our chat eventually led us to the meeting between King and Kubrick on the set of ‘The Shining.’
