As I delve into the lives of these talented young actors and actresses who graced our screens in the much-loved movie “Nativity!”, it’s truly astonishing to see how their lives have evolved since their big break. From Britain’s Got Talent finalists to Cruise ship performers, West End stars, and even dancing coaches, they’ve all managed to carve unique paths for themselves in the entertainment industry.
This year, as we celebrate Christmas, it’s been 15 years since the first Nativity! movie hit theaters in the United Kingdom, launching a series that eventually expanded to four films.
Absolutely, each movie features a distinct actor portraying the lead teacher. Martin Freeman, David Tennant, and Martin Clunes alternated roles in the initial trilogy, while various other familiar actors have appeared throughout the series.
In the initial three movies, Jason Watkins was a consistent presence, with the debut film featuring actors such as Shetland’s Ashley Jensen, television legend Ricky Tomlinson, and renowned comedian Alan Carr.
Indeed, it was Marc Wootton’s charming portrayal of the disorganized yet endearing teacher’s aid, Desmond Poppy, and the talented child actors that truly stole the spotlight in these films.
Read on for everything you need to know.
Mark Wootton played Mr Poppy
To kick off our discussion about the characters, let’s begin with Mr. Poppy, a beloved figure in the movie portrayed by Mark Wootton. While it’s true that these films are perhaps his most iconic roles, it’s important to note that he has maintained a successful acting career. His resume includes the debut episode of Inside No. 9, the film Greatest Days inspired by Take That, and the Channel 4 sitcom High and Dry, where he not only acted but also wrote and directed.
Lately, he held a significant part in the Noel Fielding’s Apple TV+ series titled “The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin.” Additionally, this year, he portrayed Marek within a National Theatre production of “Till the Stars Come Down.
Jake Pratt played Alfie
Alfie Pratt, a child actor recognized for his past roles, took on the significant character of Joseph in the nativity play within the film. He was among the few young actors in the production who had already gained some fame, having showcased his talents during the first season of Britain’s Got Talent back in 2007 and advancing all the way to the semi-finals.
As a performer, I’ve graced the stages of the West End in the musical sensation “Billy Elliot,” and over time, I’ve made appearances on numerous shows produced by CBBC. Most recently, my voice can be heard bringing various animals to life in the humorous mockumentary series “The Zoo.
Sydney Isitt-Ager played Sadie
In my cinematic journey, I found myself captivated by the performances of the versatile Isitt-Ager, who breathed life into the character of Sadie. Initially, this young actress was hesitant to participate in the nativity scene in the initial film, but her acting prowess shone brightly nonetheless.
Two years past, she played a minor part in the Netflix holiday movie “Christmas on Mistletoe Farm.” More recently, she’s been traveling across the UK for “I Should Be So Lucky – The Musical” performances.
Ben Wilby played Bob
Bob was a beloved character, portrayed by the talented Ben Wilby, who has accrued some television roles post-Bob, appearing in episodes of Father Brown (in 2014) and Cuckoo (in 2019).
On his privately-set Instagram profile, he identifies himself as an actor and boasts training from the Emil Dane Academy. However, it remains unclear which recent acting roles he may have undertaken.
Krista Hyatt played Becky
In the production, Hyatt portrayed Becky, a student from Oakmoor, our competing school. Interestingly, this character was also a familiar face, having previously showcased talent on Britain’s Got Talent as part of the dance duo Cheeky Monkeys during season 2.
Despite not having any more acting roles listed, she’s managed to build up a good fan base on TikTok, with over 17,000 followers.
Maeve Dolan played Sam
Maeve Dolan portrayed the role of Sam, whose most memorable scene was her performance of Wheatus’ hit “Teenage Dirtbag.” Although she appeared in the sequel, she has since retired from acting, but she did take on a role in a 2023 short film called “Nothing Happened.
She also regularly posts on TikTok, where she has just over 4,000 followers.
Bernard Mensah played TJ
In the performance, the character of TJ, portrayed as Angel Gabriel, was brought to life by actor Bernard Mensah. Later, he took on the role of Young Simba in the London stage adaptation of The Lion King. As for his current activities, it’s unclear what they may be.
Tom McGarrity played Zack
In the nativity auditions for that unforgettable movie, I had the privilege of taking on a role that truly left an impact – and it was none other than Zack, skillfully portrayed by the talented Tom McGarrity. Today, he continues to captivate audiences as a performer aboard cruise ships.
Lately, he shared on Instagram about his latest job as a Cruise Director, expressing that he’s “continuing the journey of sailing and providing entertainment”.
Cadi Mullane played Crystal
In the play, Crystal took on a significant role during the nativity scene and was represented on screen by Cadi Mullane. Afterwards, Cadi has carried on with her career in the performing arts. As a recent graduate from the Royal Welsh Musical Theatre, she is now eager to secure acting roles.
Bessie Cursons played Christy
Previously on Britain’s Got Talent, another contestant named Cursons advanced to the finals. This occurred during the very first season of the ITV talent program in 2007.
She went on to pick up a few other stage and screen credits – most recently a 2016 episode of Casualty – while she is also qualified as a dancing coach and offers classes through The Bessie Cursons Theatre & Dance Academy.
