In contrast to the initial season that unfolded in North Africa, this second season is set during Spring 1943 and finds our troops, under the command of Paddy Mayne, being deployed to Europe’s mainland. As the tides of the Second World War change, the action now moves to the continent.
In addition to O’Connell and Boutella, the cast for season 2 features returning actors Dominic West and Connor Swindells, along with newcomers Gwilym Lee and Jack Barton.
However, where exactly was the new season filmed? Was it all captured on location, or were UK settings used as a stand-in for Italian locations?

Where was SAS Rogue Heroes season 2 filmed?
In the second season, I found myself engrossed in the thrilling narrative as the Special Air Service (SAS) shifted their battlefront from North Africa to Europe, playing a pivotal role in the invasion of Italy.
The change in location required a relocation, with the work transitioning from Morocco to Croatia. Interestingly, Croatia stood in for Italy during the production, even though a significant portion of the series was still filmed in the United Kingdom.
According to a tweet from Director Stephen Woolfenden, who recently renamed his account as X, the production of the show has completed more than 81 scenes. Filming locations included Croatia, Italy, England, and Scotland.
One English location featured in some scenes is situated near Hertfordshire. In a Q&A session for season 2, it was revealed by Woolfenden that the epic clifftop gun battle shown in episode 1 was filmed at this very spot.
He clarified that the intense battle scene depicted in the movie took place at the white chalk cliffs of Hertfordshire, a location you might recognize from Deadpool. They filmed quite a significant sequence for the movie there, and it’s known for its striking, white-cliffed landscape. Over the course of three nights, they captured the action.
On one particular night, it poured down so heavily, leaving layers of muddy clay everywhere. Jack claimed he felt as heavy as double his usual weight due to the mud caked onto his boots. As a result, they had to hastily move and many of the depicted elements were authentic. Consequently, we were setting up explosives, placing mortar around, and using grenades for special effects.
In Hertfordshire, another shooting site was a tank situated close to Watford, where several underwater and boating scenes were filmed, such as a significant scene in the initial episode.
Karen Wilson, the producer, explained during the Q&A session: “The entire sequence was filmed in a tank close to Watford. I visited the set and observed that scenes inside the boat prevented viewers from seeing the water. I questioned this decision, asking, ‘Why are we filming the action within the boat when we can’t see the water? Why are we doing it here?’ The main focus was on capturing the necessary performances from our actors, which required them to feel the boat.
She mentioned that the team felt a bit apprehensive about embarking on season 2 without the unique advantage that the desert setting offered in terms of scale, aesthetics, and character.
Wilson went on to say: “When we embarked on discovering the face of our new battlefield, it was crucial that we interacted with civilians and experienced authentic life. Working in Croatia, I must say, was an overall rewarding experience as it truly met our requirements.
It seems we’ve reached a consensus after discussing it. We all understand the magnitude is still there, but the presentation has undergone a significant change in appearance and atmosphere.
Jack O’Connell, who plays Paddy Mayne in the film, mentioned that he had hoped shooting in Croatia would be more like a vacation than filming in Morocco. However, he found out that it could also get just as hot.
He went on to say: “The itinerary was quite intense, wasn’t it? Yet captivating. And we found ourselves in the region of Croatia that once belonged to Italy, so we encountered numerous towns constructed during Venetian rule. Consequently, it was a truly extraordinary encounter.
Where was SAS Rogue Heroes season 1 filmed?
As I delve into the thrilling world of SAS Rogue Heroes, I must say that the majority of this gripping series was beautifully captured right here in my own backyard – good old England. However, the production team didn’t shy away from venturing further afield, and they skillfully incorporated stunning scenes filmed in the captivating landscapes of Morocco as well.
David Kellick, the Location Manager, disclosed that several English sites were utilized as stand-ins for Cairo scenes. Some of these locations were a grand estate in Norfolk, an old RAF base in Suffolk, Minley Manor in Hampshire, former Malta Barracks, and an abandoned limestone quarry.
During this time, White Waltham Airfield in Berkshire served as the central base of operations for the season. Kellick elaborated, “White Waltham boasted a runway, old hangars, buildings suitable for prop stores, and a newly constructed grain store that (after some discussions) was transformed into our construction area for sets.
Regarding the filming of our work set in Morocco, specifically the Sahara desert, Connor Swindells as David Stirling stated: “It was incredibly challenging to shoot under such extreme conditions, but it lent an authenticity that no other situation could mimic.
I’m genuinely appreciative of this experience. It was unique, almost like a character on its own, and presented challenges that we, as a team, had to grapple with. I’m thankful for the difficulty it posed, and I believe these challenges will enrich our performances and ultimately make them even more exceptional.
As a seasoned filmmaker with years of experience under my belt, I’ve come to learn that there are certain elements beyond our control that we just have to go with the flow on. Take sandstorms, for instance – they can wreak havoc on our production schedule and equipment, but sometimes they also provide us with stunning visuals that would cost a fortune in visual effects.
Case in point, during one of our shoots in the desert, we encountered an unexpected sandstorm that threatened to bring everything to a halt. However, instead of panicking, we decided to roll with it and capture the storm on camera. Little did we know, that footage would become some of the most breathtaking scenes in our series, saving us a significant amount of money in post-production costs.
So, while sandstorms may be unpredictable and frustrating at times, I’ve learned to embrace them as opportunities rather than obstacles. After all, life is full of surprises, and sometimes the best outcomes come from rolling with the punches!
Our story focuses on individuals who endured an incredibly brutal war against a horrific ideology. Their experiences were far more harrowing and traumatic than anything we media professionals face. If they persevered through such adversity, then I believe my complaints pale in comparison.
