Where was Sherwood season 2 filmed? Location guide for BBC drama

As a cinephile with a penchant for British dramas set in historical contexts, I must say that Sherwood season 2 has piqued my interest and rekindled my love for the gritty, realistic portrayal of life in medieval England. Growing up in the heart of Nottinghamshire myself, it’s a delight to see the familiar landscapes and locales being showcased on the small screen.

In the second season, Sherwood makes a comeback with a big impact starting this weekend. New faces, tales, and subplots are introduced, yet the picturesque backdrop of Nottinghamshire remains constant, along with our familiar leading character.

On this occasion, the show delves deeper into Nottingham since it was filmed within the region.

As a passionate cinephile hailing from Ashfield, I’m thrilled to witness our hometown taking center stage yet again in this captivating series. The creator and writer, James Graham, who shares similar roots, has skillfully woven our local landscapes around Nottinghamshire into the narrative. Remarkably, some familiar locations from season one are repurposed for the enthralling second season, offering a delightful sense of continuity and connection to our cherished past.

In this latest installment, I find myself drawn to the unfolding saga of the persistent feuds among certain families in the neighborhood, all while grappling with the devastating effects of drug abuse, gang activities, and violent incidents that are tearing through our community.

However, let’s find out where the scenes for Sherwood were shot. Here is a rundown of the various locations used in the second season of the BBC series.

Where was Sherwood season 2 filmed?

Sherwood season 2 was filmed in and around Nottingham, just like the first season.

On this occasion, there are a higher number of city center-based scenes featuring prominently the Nottingham City Hall, which is utilized right from the start to establish the atmosphere for the ensuing discussions regarding the development of the mines.

In the fresh season, we’re introduced to a newly elected Sheriff of Nottingham, Lisa Waters, portrayed by Ria Zmitrowicz. Consequently, many of her storylines unfold within the City Hall.

In an interview with BBC, James Graham, the creator and writer of the series, shared his experience filming certain scenes: “While shooting, we had the opportunity to film inside the real Sheriff’s office located in City Hall. We even got to meet the actual Sheriff at that time, who was both wonderful and inspiring. Small glimpses into civic life, which some might find dull or monotonous, I find intriguing and captivating. So, I felt it was essential for our production to incorporate our own version of the Sheriff.”

In addition, as depicted in the first episode of the newly released series, other significant locations such as Nottingham Castle are featured. Here, you’ll find Lisa encountering Franklin Warner, played by Robert Lindsay.

The main office of Nottinghamshire County Council, located in West Bridgford, was additionally utilized as a set for the filming of season 2.

As a long-time fan of this show, I’m thrilled to see that they’ve chosen Skegness as one of their new locations for the second season. Having spent several summers by the seaside in my youth, I can attest to the charm and allure of coastal towns like Skegness. The series is sure to capture its unique character and atmosphere, making it a fitting backdrop for this captivating storyline. I can’t wait to see how they weave Skegness into the narrative and bring its essence to life on screen.

Regarding our time with the BBC, Lorraine Ashbourne shared: “We spent a day in Skegness, which was quite enjoyable, though discussing it further might reveal too many plot details. However, I must say that I had the opportunity to perform some thrilling stunts and include some high-action sequences in this series.”

It’s possible that some future beach scenes were filmed in Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire, since it was shared (through Lincolnshire Live) that filming began there in 2023.

The first season was shot in various places, including Astley, Tyldesley Miners’ Welfare Institute, and other spots near Rivington and Manchester, with Ashfield serving as the original mining village setting.

Just like in season 2, the shooting was carried out yet again on Elliott Street in Tyldesley, as well as near Victoria Mill in Atherton, as reported by The Bolton News.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve noticed that while the first season was filmed in various cities like Manchester, Bolton, Blackpool, and Yorkshire, it appears that the second season is predominantly set in Nottingham for many of its scenes.

The second season of Sherwood premieres with a two-part special over the bank holiday weekend, airing on both BBC One and BBC iPlayer starting from 9 pm on Sunday, 25th August, and continuing on Monday, 26th August.
