Where was Squid Game filmed? Location guide for Netflix series

As a movie connoisseur who has traveled far and wide, I must say that Squid Game has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on my cinematic journey. Having traversed various corners of the globe, I’ve witnessed the power of film in bridging cultures and captivating audiences worldwide.

The success of Squid Game has made Korean television dramas a hot commodity in the entertainment industry, with several others also garnering international attention from Netflix‘s enormous global audience.

Despite the fact that Squid Game tackles significant social and political matters in South Korea, it’s not surprising that some viewers are captivated by their curiosity to explore the beauty and culture of East Asia.

More recently, this place is recognized as a cutting-edge tech hub; however, shows like Squid Game and Parasite by Bong Joon-ho have highlighted a concerning wealth gap between its wealthy and poor residents.

In the opening scenes of the Netflix series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, we find ourselves on the bustling Seoul subway, where an enigmatic salesman (portrayed by Gong Yoo) selects ordinary citizen Gi-hun to participate in a dangerous, high-stakes game.

Speaking of the extraordinary Squid Game complex, it was built specifically for the purpose of filming – this is where the popular series Squid Game was produced.

Where was Squid Game filmed?

In the city of Daejeon, Squid Game was filmed, serving as the production’s primary location. During the shooting process, members of the cast marked their presence at this site. Notably, several sets were constructed exclusively for this popular series within the city.

Daejeon, with approximately 1.5 million residents, ranks as the fifth biggest city in South Korea. It’s strategically situated in the country’s central area, approximately an hour’s travel by high-speed train from its capital, Seoul.

The city is one of the high-tech capitals of the region and has earned itself the nickname of Asia’s Silicon Valley with some people, referencing the high density of research universities and tech companies concentrated in the area.

Indeed, the research and development hubs for corporations like Samsung and LG are typically situated within or near this city, a location that shares partnerships with Seattle, U.S.A., and Brisbane, Australia.

This location is well-versed in filming major productions as well, including the successful zombie film Train to Busan. However, if you plan on visiting, be aware that it’s approximately a 14-hour flight from the UK, which can make for a rather lengthy trip.

Where is the Squid Game island?

For the fictional characters on the show, the location of the game remains unknown – however, in reality, it’s acknowledged as Seongapdo island.

regretfully, it’s impossible for tourists to explore the beautiful Seongapdo Island as it is a privately owned property and does not allow public visits or tourism.

It’s not shocking that the Squid Game went unnoticed for such a long time considering it’s located quite far from Incheon, a coastal city adjacent to Seoul where Gi-hun nearly catches a flight at the end of season 1.

What is Squid Game about?

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’d describe this show as follows: I’m drawn into a world where a motley crew of financially strapped individuals find themselves in a unique game show. The games are reminiscent of those we played as children, but the stakes are far from innocent – life-altering riches for winners, and a grim fate for losers.

As a film enthusiast, I’d like to share with you a sneak peek of the series that has everyone buzzing. If you haven’t had a chance to catch up yet and are curious to understand why everyone’s talking about it, here’s a trailer to give you a taste!
