In the comic book series, DC Comics Presents, there was a supporting storyline titled “Whatever Happened To…?” where it filled readers in on less prominent characters such as Congorilla, Sandman, and Doctor Mid-Nite. Now, we’re curious to find out what’s happening with the main trio: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman from DC Comics.
After James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled their initial 10 projects for DC Studios in January 2023 – including a Superman movie reboot, a Batman revamp, and a live-action Wonder Woman prequel series on Themyscira – the pair recently met with a select group of journalists at Warner Bros. Burbank lot to discuss progress on most of their initial plans.
Originally planned projects such as the shows “Waller” and “Booster Gold”, along with films like “Swamp Thing” and “The Authority”, have been temporarily shelved. On the other hand, projects like Mike Flanagan’s “Clayface” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Sgt. Rock”, which were unveiled later, gained prominence due to their powerful scripts.
Despite a six-year plan that Gunn refers to as “basic,” leading towards an event similar to the Avengers, Safran stated, “We’ve mapped out our own plan, but we’re open to adjustments as new ideas emerge during the production of Superman or Supergirl, or while scripts are being written. There’s a degree of flexibility in it, even though we know where the larger story is eventually going.
Currently, the DCU Batman and Robin film titled “The Brave and the Bold” continues to be in an active development stage. On the other hand, the Teen Titans team has been given the green light, with a script being written by Ana Nogueira, who previously worked on “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” Additionally, Matthew Orton, known for his work on “Moon Knight,” is working on a confidential project that reportedly involves the villains Bane and Deathstroke.
On the television side of the DC Universe, the second season of “Peacemaker” is yet to air on Max this year, while “Lanterns” is tentatively scheduled for early 2026 on HBO. Additionally, three fresh animated series aimed at a younger audience – “DC Super Powers”, “Starfire”, and “My Adventures with Green Lantern” – have been given the go-ahead. The spinoff series of “The Suicide Squad/Peacemaker” titled “Waller” and the humorous time-traveling series “Booster Gold”, though in development, are not as far along in their production process.
Not much detail was shared regarding “Paradise Lost”, except for the fact that its production remains ongoing. (Recently, Gunn mentioned that it’s currently undergoing very active development.)
Initially, in 2023, Safran characterized the Max series as a narrative akin to “Game of Thrones,” revolving around Themyscira/Paradise Island, the realm of the Amazons and Wonder Woman’s origin. This tale encompasses the depth of darkness, conflict, and political machinations within this female-only society. Notably, scenes from this pre-Diana era have been showcased in the adult animated series Creature Commandos, where the antagonist Circe made an appearance in Themyscira.
Gunn commented, “This tale uncovers the beginnings of this female-led society. What’s their ideology? What laws do they abide by? Who holds power among them? What intricate games do they engage in to ascend? I find it incredibly intriguing.
An update regarding Wonder Woman emerged a few days later, on Tuesday, when Warner Bros. Discovery announced their decision to close several game development studios, including Monolith Productions, who were working on an open-world Wonder Woman video game. As part of a shift in strategy for the gaming division, WB Games and Monolith’s Wonder Woman project will not proceed.
In the DC Extended Universe, it appears that for now, characters like Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Aquaman, portrayed by Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, and Jason Momoa respectively, are taking a step back. On the other hand, characters such as Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter, who have had less screen time or were absent until now, seem to be in the spotlight, at least initially.
In the animated show titled “Super Powers”, Flash will join forces with characters such as Lightning, Aquagirl, Plastic Man, Green Lantern, Terra, and Martian Manhunter. Meanwhile, Jessica Cruz will have her own spinoff series, “My Adventures with Superman”, where she’ll be using the Power Ring. In an episode of “Creature Commandos”, there was a brief appearance of Wonder Woman in animated form, representing her corpse.
When they assumed leadership at DC, the co-chairmen aimed to establish “a unified, harmonious, and consistent feel across this universe,” according to Safran. Fans are eager to see these legendary characters interacting, and they desire to experience this enduring intellectual property as a single, interconnected whole. In essence, they want a trinity of unity, harmony, and consistency in the DC universe.
