Prior to Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, which generated a stir in the gaming world by selling one million copies within 48 hours in 2024, fans had been patiently waiting for quite some time. In fact, it took approximately 15 years for another installment of this beloved series to appear; the last game, Call of Pripyat, was released back in 2009.
As a long-time fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of Heart of Chornobyl, given that it’s been 17 years since the original game. With the strides in technology we’ve made over the past two decades, Heart of Chornobyl certainly seems poised to deliver an enhanced gaming experience. However, the question remains: does it surpass Shadow of Chornobyl from 2007? Was that classic still the best? Let’s delve into it and find out.

Performance
Winner – Shadow Of Chornobyl
In an ideal scenario, one might find it hard to imagine an older game outperforming a newer one. However, we don’t live in an ideal world. The Shadow of Chernobyl, despite its initial flaws and running on the X-Ray Engine with a dash of good luck, has managed to carve out a niche for itself. It’s frequently mentioned as embodying ‘Slavjank’ spirit among the FPS community. Remarkably, it continues to thrive in the present day.
Although it boasts a more captivating name, Heart of Chornobyl is plagued with game-halting glitches. Unfortunately, your progress can be lost if a secondary character inexplicably wanders into contaminated waste and perishes.
The core of Chornobyl experiences numerous problems with its shader compilation at the start, causing it to lag in towns. Given its visual appeal, such glitches make the gameplay feel less polished. However, Shadow of Chernobyl, despite its flaws, runs smoother and has fewer bugs that might interfere with your gaming experience.
7.
Immersion
Winner – Heart Of Chornobyl
Among all games in the Stalker series, none surpasses Heart of Chornobyl in terms of immersion. It’s not just the most detailed game within the series, but also stands out as one of the most immersive first-person shooters available overall.
This game showcases the effort put into its creation, with meticulously designed gun models, realistic reload animations, a seamless open world, and animation for almost every action. It also features numerous conversations among non-player characters. Despite being 17 years behind in technology, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl struggles to keep up.
6.
Graphics
Winner – Heart Of Chornobyl
In the early 2000s, Shadow of Chornobyl commenced its development, featuring an internal engine and a small, not-so-well-known team behind it. In contrast, Heart of Chornobyl, developed in modern times, leverages Unreal Engine 5, standing out visually among its 2024 peers.
In a somewhat unfair comparison, let’s acknowledge that Shadow of Chornobyl had its merits for its time, and it continues to be respectable even now. However, in terms of visuals, Heart of Chornobyl surpasses Shadow of Chornobyl significantly within the Exclusion Zone.
5.
Sound
Winner – Heart Of Chornobyl
In terms of its auditory elements, Heart of Chornobyl boasts exceptional sound design. The game’s audio is meticulously balanced, the Ukrainian voice acting is superb, and while the English dub is commendable, it features an unusual choice where every character speaks with a British accent.
Music within the game is equally captivating and mysterious, with local tunes filling radios in bars throughout the Zone. Closed captions in the game make it easier to play for those who are hearing-impaired. The Shadow of Chornobyl was quite successful for its era, but as time progresses, it begins to show its age once more.
4.
Story
Winner – Shadow Of Chornobyl
Contrary to expectations, the narrative in Shadow of Chornobyl surpasses that of Heart of Chornobyl. Despite its vastness, the storyline in Heart of Chornobyl appears scattered. The factions are unclear, and it seems as though the plot takes a backseat to the game’s renowned gameplay elements.
In simpler terms, the new main character, Skif, seems to be a copy or tribute of previous characters such as Strelok, Scar, and Strider. These original characters also appear in the story, which gives the impression that it’s more for pleasing fans (fanservice) than advancing the plot effectively. In comparison, the plot of Shadow of Chornobyl was more straightforward, with a unique focus on the Wish Granter, who provides unexpected outcomes.
3.
Gameplay
Winner – Shadow Of Chornobyl
The game titled “Shadow of Chernobyl” is a survival-themed experience that acknowledges it offers an acceptable first-person shooter (FPS) experience. It emphasizes its strong points by prioritizing immersive simulation elements over excessive combat, as it’s not designed to replicate the fast-paced action of games like “Call of Duty” and doesn’t strive to emulate that style.
In the game Heart of Chornobyl, it seems as though its identity isn’t entirely clear: does it aim to be a horror game, given the presence of mutants that, however, seem insignificant for such a genre? Or perhaps it’s a survival game, but one that is quite burdensome since the challenge isn’t scarcity of bandages but rather the necessity to endure the application animation every time. Alternatively, could it be a first-person shooter, albeit with mediocre gameplay despite its striking visual appeal?
2.
Mods
Winner – Shadow Of Chornobyl
Over time, the classic game Shadow of Chernobyl has grown particularly fitting. This timeless title has accumulated an abundance of modifications due to its enduring popularity.
It’s quite touching to pay a visit to Nexus Mods and witness the immense affection the gaming community has for this title. The platform hosts numerous modifications aimed at enhancing the game’s graphics, allowing players to tailor their experience by customizing gameplay mechanics according to personal preferences, and even offering amusing mods that bring a humorous twist (the provided image is from Girly SoC, where all characters within the Zone are depicted as female).
The heart of Chernobyl also boasts a vibrant modding community, primarily focused on rectifying the game’s numerous technical issues. As it continues to grow, it’s likely that significant modifications will emerge from this scene – given that it’s based on Unreal Engine. For now, Shadow of Chornobyl stands as the most prominent game in this series.
1.
Verdict
Winner – Shadow of Chornobyl
It’s astonishing that Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl was brought to life under such challenging circumstances. Against all odds, GSC Game World managed to create a colossal game that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with any other triple-A title from 2024. Considering the hurdles and tribulations faced by the development team, their success is truly merited.
However, among all the games set in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, Shadow of Chernobyl remains the timeless favorite that none could surpass, including Clear Skies and Call of Pripyat. Even Heart of Chernobyl didn’t live up to expectations. Fortunately, this classic game can now be enjoyed on both modern gaming consoles and PCs, so you too can discover what makes it cherished by its dedicated fanbase.
