As a seasoned movie buff with a lifetime of film-watching under my belt, I can wholeheartedly affirm that Christmas is the most enchanting time for us cinephiles. The festive period brings forth an array of cinematic delights, and the James Bond franchise has always been a cherished tradition.
Every Christmas, there are specific elements that come to mind – the cuisine, the adornments, the melodies, and undeniably, longer, darker evenings spent in front of the television.
This season is absolutely delightful for film enthusiasts as it’s jam-packed with new releases and timeless classics on the schedule. Notably, the James Bond series has consistently held a special spot in the lineup.
007 enthusiasts often look forward to watching some of Bond’s escapades over the holidays, but regrettably, these aren’t streaming on Amazon Prime Video this season, unlike past years.
There remain several alternative choices for viewers – they could always resort to the classic James Bond film collection, or they have the option to stream or buy the movies across multiple services like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
Furthermore, it’s worth noting that some movies will be broadcast on primary free-to-air TV networks this coming holiday season, specifically from Christmas to New Year’s.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) – ITV1
Airs: Boxing Day, 9:25am
As a cinephile reflecting on cinematic history, I must confess that George Lazenby’s solitary foray into the world of 007, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, initially seemed like an anomaly when it first graced our screens. However, with the passage of time and revisits to this intriguing tale, I find myself in agreement with many others who now deem it one of the most robust entries in the illustrious James Bond franchise.
The film sees Lazenby’s Bond attempting to track down his arch nemesis Blofeld, who has a diabolical plan to hold the world to ransom by threatening its food supply.
Spectre (2015) – ITV1
Airs: Saturday 28th December, 8:30pm
In the series of films featuring Daniel Craig, this particular installment – the fourth one – is frequently criticized as a less impressive successor to Skyfall, according to Sam Mendes. However, it does contain some standout scenes, such as thrilling action sequences and another powerful acting display by Craig.
The movie tracks Bond’s journey as he pursues the clues of an enigmatic group called Spectre. However, it becomes clear that his actions are constantly being observed and controlled by its elusive mastermind, Franz Oberhauser (played by Christoph Waltz), who shares a surprising, personal history with Bond.
No Time to Die (2021) – ITV1
Airs: New Year’s Eve, 8:45pm
Kickstarting 2023 was the official TV debut of No Time to Die on New Year’s Day, and as the year comes to an end, fans get another chance to rewatch this latest blockbuster hit.
In the aftermath of the tumultuous series of events in Spectre, Bond finds himself enjoying retirement in Jamaica. However, his peaceful life is disrupted when his old friend Felix Leiter (played by Jeffrey Wright) asks for his help to rescue a scientist who has been abducted by a wicked adversary possessing lethal new technology.
In the course of events, Bond meets up once more with his past flame, Dr. Madeleine Swann (portrayed by Léa Seydoux), as well as his long-standing adversary, Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
