Which Sonic the Hedgehog Characters Deserve Their Own Series After Sonic 3 and Knuckles?

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must say that the recent revival of Sonic the Hedgehog has been a delightful rollercoaster ride. Having grown up with the Blue Blur and his friends, it’s heartening to see the franchise continuing to evolve and expand.

Fans of Sonic the Hedgehog have been feasting on exciting new releases like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles earlier this year, and with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 set to arrive in 2027, there’s also the potential for more adventures through TV shows. As we ponder who could star in such a series, here are some characters that stand out as deserving of the spotlight.

Shadow the Hedgehog

Absolutely, the mesmerizing debut of Shadow (Keanu Reeves) in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 certainly leaves me with a strong feeling that we’ll be seeing more of him. This notion is further strengthened by the post-credit scene in Sonic 3, where he’s shown to be alive and kicking, even managing to snatch one of his Inhibitor Rings that fell on Earth.

In the sequel series, Shadow might find peace dealing with Maria’s passing and escaping from persistent G.U.N pursuers. It’s plausible that Rogue the Bat and E-123 Omega, characters with strong ties to Shadow and G.U.N, will appear. The storyline may also hint at Dr. Robotnik’s current state and the mastermind behind the Metal Sonics, as suggested in the mid-credit scene. Considering the high-tech visual effects and Keanu Reeves’ involvement, costs might be substantial, but reducing episode count for a mini-series could make it more manageable without sacrificing fan appeal.

Tails & Agent Stone –

In the “Knuckles” TV show, where Idris Elba plays Knuckles and Adam Pally portrays Wade, Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub) was also part of the cast. A series focusing on our charming mechanic fox, Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and her goat-milk latte-making sidekick would be a perfect fit – like a dream come true in “Sonic” lore.

Although they are adversaries, they share a common bond in that they’ve often found themselves playing second fiddle to their main counterparts (Sonic and Dr. Robotnik). This unique dynamic has fueled an entertaining rivalry marked by intellectual sparring. However, since it appears that Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) is deceased, Agent Stone might be searching for advice on how to emulate Robotnik’s influence. Tails, being a virtuous character, could serve as an ideal ally in helping him make a meaningful impact, just like Knuckles supported Wade.

G.U.N

Although not a particular character itself, the G.U.N organization is an intriguing group that could make for an engaging series. The arrival of Director Rockwell (played by Krysten Ritter) opens up possibilities for a leading role in the show, given her apparent importance for future developments. Moreover, introducing side characters from the Sonic universe like Rachel (portrayed by Natasha Rothwell), a G.U.N agent, and Randall (Shemar Moore), could add depth and intrigue to the series.

In a G.U.N. series, the team would apprehend characters such as Sonic or Shadow and neutralize interdimensional perils, similar to Marvel’s Loki. This concept was hinted at in the Knuckles series with the addition of agents Mason and Willoughby. With Commander Walters having passed away, these two defectors might be brought back into service (assuming they managed to survive being stranded in another dimension).

The series might pave the way for G.U.N to emerge as the primary antagonist in future Sonic movies, given that Metal Sonic is one of their creations. Moreover, it presents an opportunity to expand the universe and delve into intriguing backstories that haven’t been explored in the films, such as the origins of Sonic and Shadow.

Team Chaotix

As a gaming enthusiast, I’d love to see Sonic Heroes’ Team Chaotix join the franchise in a future series! This trio – Espio the Chameleon, Vector the Crocodile, and Charmy the Bee – are a motley crew of detectives-for-hire. They might not have made their big screen debut yet, but they’re definitely characters I’d pay to play with!

There’s been talk that the trio from Team Chaotix might make their way into the Sonic movie universe. This could manifest as a dedicated show for them or they could appear in Knuckles Season 2. If this happens, it would be refreshing to see them tackle mysteries instead of large-scale action sequences. They’d bring a dose of charm and humor along with their detective work. Similar to G.U.N, Espio, Vector, and Charmy could take on peculiar cases across Earth, shedding light on various aspects of the franchise’s lore and history. Additionally, characters like Big the Cat, Rogue the Bat, and most notably, Amy Rose, who was featured in the mid-credits of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, could potentially be introduced through Team Chaotix.
