Who Is Alyssa Ashcroft in Resident Evil Requiem?

At last, Resident Evil 9, formerly known as Resident Evil 9: Resurrection, has been officially revealed during Summer Game Fest. Its new title is Resident Evil Requiem, and this initial trailer has given fans their first peek at a game that’s stirred much anticipation and gossip, particularly about who would be stepping into the protagonist role now that Ethan and Rose’s narratives have largely concluded. Although there’s still a chance for Rose to make a comeback, Resident Evil Requiem is offering a respite by introducing a fresh character—not one entirely detached from the earlier games. Instead, players will find themselves back in Raccoon City, assuming the role of Grace Ashcroft this time around.

Although Grace Ashcroft is a fresh character, her mother, Alyssa Ashcroft, has made an appearance in the series previously. Notably in “Resident Evil Outbreak”, rather than the main games. This means that some players may not be familiar with Alyssa or her significant role in motivating Grace to go to Raccoon City.

Who Is Alyssa Ashcroft?

Distinct from Alexia Ashford, the antagonist in “Resident Evil: Code Veronica”, Alyssa Ashcroft was an enterprising journalist, delving into Umbrella Corporation in 1993 upon hearing whispers of a firm bribing a hospital to experiment on patients with drugs. Her friend witnessed a tragic incident involving Dorothy Lester, infected with the t-Virus strain, who later met a gruesome end. To prevent Alyssa from exposing this incident, an Umbrella researcher employed a procedure that erased her memory of the hospital event. Therefore, she was left with vague recollections of some sort of accident or occurrence that led to the hospital’s closure.

If Alyssa had retained her memories, she potentially could have uncovered Umbrella’s activities earlier, even before the outbreak in Raccoon City, or perhaps she would have departed from the city sooner to avoid being involved in the outbreak. However, we find her in Raccoon City during the events of both Resident Evil 2 and 3. Remarkably, she manages to flee before the city was annihilated.

Following her daring breakout, Alyssa persisted in penning articles as a means to expose Umbrella’s wrongdoings. However, she found herself at odds with entities such as the government, who were more interested in hiding the fact that Bio Organic Weapons (B.O.W.s) even existed. Additionally, she delved into a series of enigmatic vanishings that occurred across a span of two years within Dulvey Parish, Louisiana. As it turned out, these disappearances were linked to the Baker family, a connection you become well-acquainted with in Resident Evil 7. Tragically, Alyssa met her end during an investigation that led her to the Wrenwood Hotel.

How Alyssa Is Important to Resident Evil Requiem

In a new development, Alyssa’s daughter, Grace Ashcroft, has become an FBI agent investigating peculiar deaths. Remarkably, this investigation leads her to Raccoon City, a place where her mother, Alyssa, had fled during the outbreak. Moreover, it appears that the Wrenwood Hotel, where her mother’s death occurred eight years ago, might be located in or near Raccoon City, as the city itself has been largely destroyed. Consequently, Grace is assigned to probe the deaths at the hotel, among which is the death of her own mother.

Consequently, Alyssa significantly influences the storyline of RE9 as her death’s aftermath deeply affects Grace, which might significantly impact Grace’s responses to events at the hotel. This narrative element bears a resemblance to the bond between Ethan and Rose in Shadows of Rose, where a child pursues parental clues to solve mysteries intertwined with their personal lives. With just the initial trailer released, RE9 appears poised to carry on Capcom’s recent triumphs in this franchise.
