Who is Hugh Hammer’s mother in House of the Dragon?

As a seasoned movie critic with a deep love for the intricacies of Game of Thrones and its prequel, House of the Dragon, I’ve been captivated by the latest twist in this epic saga. In the recent episode 7 of House of the Dragon, we were introduced to an unexpected character whose background adds yet another layer to the complex Targaryen family tree – Hugh Hammer, played brilliantly by Kieran Bew.

*Warning: Spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2 episode 7 ahead!*

In the final episodes of House of the Dragon, we’ve gained new insights into Kieran Bew’s character, Hugh the blacksmith, who astonishingly tamed the dragon Vermithor during season 2, episode 7.

In an unconventional move to bolster her forces against the Greens, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) has issued a request for those with dragonseed lineage (descendants of the Targaryen dynasty through bastard lines) to come forward. The aim is to discover new riders capable of mounting and commanding the dragons Vermithor and Silverwing.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve witnessed some gruesome deaths in this film, but thankfully, Hugh Hammer and Tom Bennett as Ulf White made it through the harrowing experience. Their survival is significant and sets the stage for greater importance in the story to come.

During those particular moments, Hugh mentioned his mother with silver hair. He disclosed an intriguing detail that she was actually the sister of the late King Viserys (Paddy Considine) and Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith).

Here’s everything you need to know.

Who is Hugh Hammer’s mother in House of the Dragon?

Hugh Hammer’s mother was Saera Targaryen, the ostracised daughter of King Jaehaerys.

Through his conversation with his wife, curious fans have managed to infer that Hugh’s mother had worked in a place of entertainment or pleasure.

“She enjoyed greater liberties than the majority due to her unique status. Wealthy men were willing to pay handsomely for the company of a woman with silver hair, including her brothers, Viserys and Daemon. She would often remind me that I was no less special than them.”

Saera, born as the ninth child to King Jaehaerys and Queen Alyssane, had a rebellious side that set her apart from her siblings. At the tender age of 11, she began experimenting with alcohol. When her needs for affection and recognition went unmet, she would lash out in anger. Yet, beneath her wayward exterior, Saera possessed an innate bravery, allure, and sweetness that captivated those around her.

Alyssane’s expulsion from the royal court occurred when she jokingly confessed to her father that she had slept with three nobles. Jaehaerys was initially persuaded by Alyssane not to banish her, but things took a turn when she attempted to escape with a dragon and was subsequently imprisoned.

Jaehaerys ordered Saera to reside with the Silent Sisters until she escaped and commenced managing a brothel in Lys. As Alysanne penned her letters pleading for permission to return, Jaehaerys remained unmoved. It is believed that Hugh was born while Saera was in Lys before she relocated to Volantis and established her own brothel.

How is Hugh Hammer related to Viserys and Daemon Targaryen?

So, Hugh Hammer is the cousin of Viserys and Daemon.

I’d put it this way: I’m here to clarify that although Hugh is Saera’s son, Viserys and Daemon have a different origin. They are the brothers of Prince Baelon Targaryen, making King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne their grandparents as well.
