The miniseries titled “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” is drawing to a close, and thus far, it’s done an impressive job of delivering an unanticipated Star Wars story that fans have greatly enjoyed. One of the standout features of this production has been its enigmas. Unlike other Star Wars stories, such as the sequel trilogy, which relied heavily on mystery box storytelling and left many fans dissatisfied when the answers didn’t meet their expectations, “Skeleton Crew” has skillfully avoided this pitfall. This is partly because its mysteries don’t revolve around the core elements that fans cherish about Star Wars, and partly because it’s revealing these mysteries in thought-provoking ways.
Each enigma unfolds into another, making mystery-box narrative particularly engaging. As the series nears its conclusion, the final enigma is a longstanding one that has been subtly hinted at since the start: who holds the position of the Supervisor at Attin? Audience members have gleaned some hints about the individual governing the planet where our titular kids’ crew hails from, and two primary theories have emerged.
At-Attin’s Supervisor Is Either a Pirate King or a Computerized Entity
The leading hypothesis suggests that pirate Tak Rennod might be the one holding the superior position, given the substantial supporting evidence. This theory was presented later in the series, following the children’s and Jod Na Nawood’s (a rogue who assisted their escape from the pirates at Port Borgo) discovery of the planet At-Achrann. This planet shared connections with their homeworld, At-Attin. It was later revealed that their ship, the Onyx Cinder, had once belonged to Tak Rennod. Eventually, they traced his whereabouts to Lapuna, where they discovered coordinates leading to his homeworld.
Upon reaching his residence, they discovered an astonishing truth: Cinder was a kin from their own planet. At-Attin, one of the Old Republic’s Jewels, has been unveiled as planets housing ancient mints of the Old Republic. These planets are protected by a formidable defense system known as the Barrier, capable of obliterating any intruding vessel. Exclusive ships can bypass this defense without detection, and remarkably, Rennod managed to acquire one such ship – none other than the Onyx Cinder.
According to this interpretation, Rennod managed to reach At-Attin at the very least. Advocates of this hypothesis speculate that he disguised himself as an Old Republic official, outsmarted the Supervisor in some way, and assumed his position. However, the most recent episode of the series has cast a shadow over these assumptions.
Earlier in the series, the identity of the Supervisor was raised when parents of the kids asked for a meeting with this figure but were denied by the numerous droids present on At-Attin. Despite there being many organic inhabitants on the planet, only the droids are seen wielding authority, managing transportation, handling truancy issues, staffing schools, and appearing as security forces. When the spaceship arrives and the children are delivered to the Republic Mint, these droids can be found everywhere.
As the ship touches down, a message broadcasts across the planet announcing an incoming Republic representative. It’s unclear whether it’s Tak Rennod speaking, but given the circumstances, it seems more plausible that it’s a computerized voice. In fact, it might be the droids acting on behalf of this computer system. Considering the situation, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Supervisor were also just a computer, which aligns well with our understanding.
The Republic established nine planets as mints and took great efforts to conceal them. Since the Republic rarely relied on droids for various tasks, it was logical for them to populate the planet with numerous organics to carry out much of the planet’s significant work. However, organics often struggle with greed, and the Republic wished to preserve its mints from such desires. To avoid this potential issue, the Republic installed an advanced AI network that could command a multitude of droids. These droids would adhere to rules without exception and thwart anyone attempting to steal from the mint.
The Mystery of the Supervisor Is About to be Revealed
Among the two theories, it appears these are the strongest contenders for the true identity of the Supervisor. The series has heavily emphasized Tak Rennod, but I have to admit, considering him as the Supervisor seems more like a misdirection or red herring. Rennod undeniably made his way to At Attin, and acquiring the ship, possibly from one of the other Jewels, granted him access to the mint. Nevertheless, it’s hard to believe that the droids would have allowed him to escape unnoticed.
The evidence now seems to point towards Rennod being killed and his body buried along with the ship, a theory that also makes sense of why the safety droids were patrolling that area earlier in the show.
In the world of Attin, there have been subtle indications since the start that it’s governed by a potent Artificial Intelligence (AI). The abundance of droids on the planet might not seem unusual in the Star Wars universe, but it does raise eyebrows in certain aspects. For instance, neither the Republic nor any other Star Wars media ever employed safety droids, and they seldom depicted them in positions of power. The only plausible explanation for this is that the Republic installed an AI system to manage the minting operations.
It appears that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew might end with an unexpected twist – it could turn out that the planet is governed by artificial intelligence! The producers have cleverly misled everyone so far, making it seem like Tak Rennod had assumed the Supervisor’s role, even though they’ve been hinting at the solution all along.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew‘s final episode debuts on Disney+ on Tuesday, January 14th at 9 p.m. ET.
